Festival of pagan, folk, and medieval music at Coucy Castle
Historica - Pagan Fest was a festival of pagan, folk, and medieval music organized in the exceptional setting of Coucy Castle (Coucy-le-Château-Auffrique), in the Aisne department. Combining concerts of folk metal, pagan metal, and medieval music with historical entertainment (medieval village, costumed reenactors, crafts), the festival offered a total immersion into the medieval and pagan universe. The lineup featured renowned European bands such as Corvus Corax, Faun, Omnia, Tanzwut, and Tri Yann, all within a site classified as a Historic Monument.
The Historica - Pagan Fest festival was held in the heart of Coucy Castle (Coucy-le-Château-Auffrique), one of France's most imposing medieval fortresses, classified as a Historic Monument. Located in the Aisne department, in the Hauts-de-France region, the site offered a magnificent setting with its 13th-century ramparts, legendary keep, and three fortified gates, to host a unique event blending pagan, folk, and medieval music.
The Historica - Pagan Fest lineup brought together renowned European and international artists, representing the genres of pagan metal, folk metal, medieval music, and Celtic music. Among the bands announced for the 2015 edition were Corvus Corax (Germany), pioneers of medieval music with their ancient instruments, Faun (Germany), a reference in pagan folk, Omnia (Netherlands), an emblematic duo of musical neo-paganism, Tanzwut (Germany), blending bagpipes and industrial sounds, Malicorne, a legend of French folk, Tri Yann, icons of Breton Celtic music, Rastaban (Belgium), and Brick à Drac. Les Derniers Trouvères completed the bill with their repertoire of authentic medieval music.
Beyond the concerts, Historica - Pagan Fest offered a true medieval immersion. A medieval village with artisans, stalls, and costumed reenactors animated the site throughout the day. Visitors could discover demonstrations of ancient crafts, taste medieval culinary specialties, and watch street performances before the evening concerts. On-site food and drink services allowed for full enjoyment of the festival atmosphere.
The festival spanned three days, from Friday to Sunday. On Friday, the site opened in the late afternoon with the first evening concerts. Saturday was the main day, with the medieval village opening in the morning, entertainment throughout the day, and headliners in the evening. On Sunday, medieval entertainment continued with afternoon concerts. Evening concerts ran until 1:30 AM on Friday and Saturday.
Despite an ambitious lineup and an exceptional setting, the Historica - Pagan Fest festival had a short lifespan. The 2015 edition, scheduled for September 25-27 with a prestigious lineup, was canceled due to organizational issues. The festival has not resumed since, and the official website historicacoucy.fr is no longer online. Historica - Pagan Fest nevertheless remains in the memory of pagan and folk music enthusiasts as an original and ambitious project, rooted in a remarkable historical heritage.
The festival took place at Coucy Castle, in the fortified town of Coucy-le-Château-Auffrique (02380), in the Aisne department.
