Multidisciplinary summer festival in the heart of the Comtadine city: live performances, concerts, street theater, and open-air entertainment
Every summer, Carpentras comes alive to the rhythm of Les Estivales, its multidisciplinary festival that takes over the squares, alleys, and historic monuments of the city. For several weeks, concerts, street performances, theater, dance, and circus arts follow one another in the exceptional setting of the historic center, mixing local troupes and national artists in a festive and popular atmosphere. Free entry for most performances, Les Estivales make Carpentras an unmissable cultural event of the Vaucluse summer.
The Estivales de Carpentras were born from the city's desire to offer an ambitious and popular summer cultural program, rooted in the exceptional heritage spaces of the former capital of the Comtat Venaissin. Every summer, the festival takes over the emblematic squares of the city — Place du Général de Gaulle, Place de la Mairie, Place d'Inguimbert — as well as the picturesque alleys and gardens of the historic center.
The Estivales' program is distinguished by its artistic diversity: classical music, jazz, world music, and French variety concerts, contemporary and classical theater performances, dance performances, street arts, circus, and visual arts follow one another throughout the summer weeks. Local troupes from Vaucluse mingle with regional, national, and international artists, in a spirit of openness and conviviality.
The magic of Les Estivales also lies in its venues. The Saint-Siffrein Cathedral (14th-15th century), a masterpiece of Southern Gothic with its famous "boule aux rats," offers a striking setting for sacred and classical music concerts. The Hôtel-Dieu de Carpentras, whose Inguimbert library holds priceless manuscript heritage, is ideal for intimate readings and recitals.
The Place du Général de Gaulle, shaded by century-old plane trees, hosts open-air street performances, while the Place d'Inguimbert and its fountains become a natural stage for popular evening concerts. The Roman Triumphal Arch (1st century AD), integrated into the walls of the former cathedral, serves as a constant reminder of the deep history of this city founded in antiquity.
The vibrant heart of Les Estivales is its free street performances that transform Carpentras into an open-air stage. Jugglers, acrobats, clowns, traveling theater companies, street musicians: the city buzzes with activity from dusk till dawn. The alleys of old Carpentras, between the medieval synagogue and the belfry, become a labyrinth of artistic surprises where families and strollers drift from one performance to another.
Contemporary circus arts have a prominent place in the summer program, with companies that blend acrobatics, aerial dance, live music, and visual poetry. These performances, often free or low-cost, attract a multigenerational audience and make Les Estivales a truly popular and accessible celebration for everyone.
The evenings of Les Estivales are punctuated by open-air concerts in the city's gardens and squares. Gypsy jazz and swing, Mediterranean and Oriental music, flamenco, reggae, world music, French variety, and acoustic rock make up an eclectic program that reflects the cultural richness of Vaucluse and Provence.
Classical music concerts and chamber music are also on the program, in the heritage spaces of the old town — the nave of the cathedral, the bishop's cloister, heritage halls — where acoustics and architecture combine to offer musical moments of rare intensity. The festival also hosts master classes and artist meet-and-greets, open to the public.
Les Estivales are also the perfect opportunity to (re)discover Carpentras through its exceptional heritage. The Carpentras Synagogue (1367), a listed historic monument, is one of the oldest synagogues in France still in use, a testament to the long history of the Comtadine Jewish community under papal protection. The Musée Comtadin-Duplessis traces the history of the city and the Comtat Venaissin, while the Inguimbert Library holds manuscript and printed treasures from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.
The city is also famous for its "berlingots de Carpentras", striped candies whose recipe dates back to the 19th century, and for its legendary Friday morning market, one of the largest and liveliest in Vaucluse, where producers, artisans, and locals gather in the Provençal market tradition.
The spirit of Les Estivales is that of a shared and accessible celebration. The majority of performances are free or very affordably priced, ensuring that summer culture is a common good open to all residents and visitors. Les Estivales foster exchanges between artists and the public, with opportunities for meetings, visual arts exhibitions in downtown shops, and participatory workshops throughout the festival.
The festival is part of the cultural development initiative of the Communauté de Communes du Pays de Carpentras, which uses culture as a driver for tourism appeal and social cohesion for the Ventoux region of Provence. Carpentras, 25 km from Avignon and at the foot of Mont Ventoux, is thus an ideal starting point for exploring all of northern Vaucluse during the summer season.
Les Estivales de Carpentras returns in July 2026 for another month of live performances, open-air concerts, street theater, and circus arts in the historic center of the Comtadine city. A multidisciplinary and popular festival, mostly free, at the foot of Mont Ventoux.
The Estivales de Carpentras 2026 promise another month of cultural and artistic celebration in the exceptional setting of the historic center of the Comtadine city. From the first days of July, street performances, concerts, dance, and circus arts will take over the squares and alleys of the former capital of the Comtat Venaissin.
The 2026 program is expected to continue the multidisciplinary formula that has made previous editions successful: free street performances during the day and early evening, themed concerts in the city squares, contemporary creations in dance and theater, and heritage concerts in Carpentras' historic venues.
The ambition of Les Estivales is to make summer in Carpentras a complete and accessible cultural experience for everyone, in a spirit of Provençal conviviality and artistic openness. The full program will be available in spring 2026 from the Tourist Office and on the City of Carpentras website.
