Les Insulaires

The itinerant festival of the Ponant Islands

Île-de-Sein — Finistère (29) Since 2011

About Les Insulaires

Les Insulaires is an itinerant festival born in 2011 on the Île d'Yeu, organized by and for the inhabitants of the Ponant Islands. Each year, the festival sets up on a different island on the Atlantic coast for three days of meetings, debates, shows, concerts, and exchanges. In 2024, it was the Île de Sein in Finistère that hosted the 11th edition of this unique and entirely free event. Driven by the islanders themselves, the festival celebrates the culture, identity, and challenges of island territories in a spirit of sharing, conviviality, and environmental responsibility.

Les Insulaires: The festival that travels from island to island

Since 2011, the festival Les Insulaires has carried a unique concept in the French festival scene: each year, the event moves to a different island of the Ponant, these inhabited islands off the French Atlantic coast. Born on the Île d'Yeu, the festival has since traveled to Belle-Île, Ouessant, Molène, Hoedic, Aix, Bréhat, Groix, Batz, Île-aux-Moines, Houat, Sein, and Arz.

A festival by and for islanders

The uniqueness of Les Insulaires lies in its participatory organization. It is the inhabitants of the host island who form committees to decide on the programming, meals, activities, and all logistical aspects. This organizational method guarantees an authentic territorial anchoring and makes the festival a true collective project, driven by islanders for islanders, but open to all.

Three days of celebration and exchange

For three days, the festival offers a rich and varied program: concerts, street performances, debates on the future of island territories, a producers' market from the islands, a skiff race, a choir, a costumed parade, and fanfare processions. The Ponant Islands village allows visitors to discover the specificities of each island and interact with their inhabitants.

Île de Sein in 2024

In September 2024, the 11th edition of the festival was held on the Île de Sein, in Finistère. This mythical rock in the Iroise Sea, famous for its commitment during World War II, hosted islanders from all the Ponant Islands for a memorable weekend of sharing and celebrating island culture.

Free, eco-responsible, and supportive

The festival is entirely free and open to all: islanders and continentals, island lovers and the simply curious. The event is part of an eco-responsible approach, with particular attention paid to waste reduction, material reuse, and the encouragement of collective transport. This philosophy reflects the environmental awareness inherent in island communities, who live daily with the challenges of climate change.
