Medieval festival at the Cathar castle of Saissac in the Montagne Noire
Les Médiévales de Saissac is an annual medieval festival held at the Cathar castle of Saissac, perched on a rocky outcrop in the Montagne Noire region of Aude. Organized since 2015 by the Château de Saissac team, the event spans two days and features a recreated medieval camp, chivalry and combat demonstrations, workshops on daily life in the Middle Ages, equestrian shows, and medieval music and dances. Admission is included with the castle entrance ticket, making the event accessible to the whole family in an exceptional heritage site.
The Château de Saissac, a 11th-century Cathar fortress perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the Vernassonne valley, provides a spectacular setting for the Médiévales de Saissac. Classified as a historical monument, the castle—one of the oldest in the Cathar Country—is the ideal stage for an immersion into medieval life. Every first weekend of August, the site transforms into a genuine 12th-century village, complete with encampments, artisan stalls, and activities for all ages.
The heart of the festival lies in the chivalry demonstrations that take place within the castle grounds. Visitors witness sword fights, jousting tournaments in armor, archery practice, and equestrian shows featuring riders in period costume. Historical reenactment troupes, specializing in the 12th and 13th centuries, present spectacular and educational combat sequences, explaining medieval fighting techniques to the public.
The recreated medieval camp allows visitors to discover ancient crafts through numerous interactive workshops:
These workshops, led by enthusiasts in costume, offer a fun and educational approach to daily life in the Middle Ages.
The artistic program includes medieval music concerts with period instruments (hurdy-gurdy, psaltery, flutes, drums), medieval dances in which the public is invited to participate (on Sundays), and storytelling shows that will delight young and old alike. The festive and family-friendly atmosphere makes the Médiévales de Saissac a convivial, accessible, and enriching event for all generations.
The 12th edition of Les Médiévales de Saissac is scheduled for early August 2026 at the Château de Saissac. Medieval camp, combat, workshops, and activities. Dates to be confirmed.
