Large free medieval festival in the heart of Châteaudun — the 25th Foire aux Laines, of iron and fire
The Médiévales Dunoises is the large free medieval festival in the historic center of Châteaudun, organized by the City at the foot of the castle. Heir to the Foire aux Laines — a royal fair established in the 18th century and named « Foire aux Laines » in the 19th century in reference to the wool trade of the Beauce flocks —, the event took its current form as a medieval festival in the early 2000s. Subtitled « Of iron and fire », it plunges the city into the Middle Ages for a long weekend in early July: a medieval market with a hundred artisans, knight fights, fire shows, historical encampments, a banquet at the castle, and numerous free activities attracting thousands of visitors.
Every summer, in early July, the historic center of Châteaudun transforms into a true medieval city for a long weekend. The Médiévales Dunoises, subtitled « Of iron and fire », offer a total immersion into the world of the Middle Ages, at the foot of the imposing Châteaudun castle, an architectural gem classified as a Monument Historique. This fortress, which majestically overlooks the Loir valley, provides an authentic and spectacular setting for this entirely free popular festival.
The event is the direct heir to the Foire aux Laines of Châteaudun, one of the oldest fairs in the city. The efforts initiated in 1713 led the following year to the granting, by royal letters patent obtained thanks to the duc de Luynes, of six annual fairs, the most important of which was held on the first Thursday of July: it was this fair that took the name « Foire aux Laines » in the 19th century, in reference to the wool trade of the Beauce flocks. Having become a full-fledged medieval festival in the early 2000s, the event was renamed « Médiévales Dunoises de fer et de feu » between 2022 and 2025, before the City restored its historical name of Foire aux Laines for its 25th edition in 2026.
The beating heart of the festival is its large medieval market, which brings together a hundred exhibitors in the city center streets: artisans, creators, local producers, blacksmiths, stone carvers, glassmakers, calligraphers, illuminators, and other trades of yesteryear. Visitors discover and acquire unique artisanal creations, taste local products, and immerse themselves in the lively atmosphere of a period market, punctuated by demonstrations of ancestral know-how.
Knight tournaments are among the most anticipated moments of the festival, with reenactment troops clashing in armor and demonstrations of medieval combat sports (béhourd). Nocturnal fire shows add a magical dimension to the event, illuminating the city walls and the castle courtyard with a dancing and enchanting glow.
The festival offers numerous activities over three days: music concerts, costumed parades, inhabited historical encampments, participatory workshops for children and families, street performances, juggling, acrobatics, and theater. Professional companies and local associations animate the city throughout the weekend. All programming within the city is free, making this event a truly popular and accessible gathering for everyone.
Supported by the City of Châteaudun, the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, and a network of engaged local associations, the medieval festival has established itself as one of the major events in Eure-et-Loir. The success of this event testifies to the public's enthusiasm for historical reenactments and the formidable cultural and tourist potential of Châteaudun and its medieval heritage.
The 25th edition of the Châteaudun medieval festival, which for the occasion regains its historical name of Foire aux Laines, will be held from Friday, July 3rd to Sunday, July 5th, 2026, in the historic center, at the foot of the castle. This free medieval festival of « iron and fire » offers its market of a hundred artisans, knight fights, fire shows, historical encampments, costumed parades, and numerous activities. The medieval banquet on Friday evening in the castle courtyard opens the festivities.
For 2026, the Châteaudun medieval festival returns to its historical name of Foire aux Laines and celebrates its 25th edition from Friday, July 3rd to Sunday, July 5th, in the historic center and at the foot of the castle. The event retains its « iron and fire » spirit: a large medieval market with a hundred exhibitors, knight fights and buhurt, nocturnal fire shows, historical encampments, parades, and activities for all families. Access to the festival in the city remains entirely free; only the medieval banquet on Friday evening at the castle is paid and requires reservation.
