Open-air theatre, music, and street arts performances in the Most Beautiful Village in France
Les Soirées d'Été de Gordes offers a program of live outdoor performances every July and August in one of Provence's most famous villages. Theatre, concerts, dance, and street arts liven up the evenings in the perched village, against the incomparable backdrop of the Château square, medieval alleys, and terraces with views of the Luberon. A family-friendly festival open to all, celebrating the cultural life of a village listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in France.
There is hardly a village in Provence—perhaps in France—as universally recognized for its ideal beauty as Gordes. Perched at an altitude of 373 meters on a rocky spur of the Vaucluse plateau, facing the Luberon Regional Natural Park, this village of some 2,000 inhabitants accumulates distinctions: listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in France, it is also one of the most photographed villages in the country, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world each year.
Its heritage is exceptional: the Renaissance Château de Gordes (16th century), rebuilt by Bertrand de Simiane, proudly overlooks the round-tiled roofs and stepped alleys. A few kilometers away, the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque, founded in 1148 by the Cistercians, is one of the most photographed monuments in France, especially when its lavender fields are in bloom in early summer. The Village des Bories, a complex of dry-stone constructions from the Neolithic to the modern era, testifies to the long human presence on the plateau.
Gordes is also a village that lives and loves culture. Art galleries, artist studios, and cultural events have been an integral part of Gordes' identity for decades—the painter Victor Vasarely lived there and founded a museum, and many artists and intellectuals have chosen the village as a place to live or draw inspiration.
It is in this vibrant and open spirit that the Soirées d'Été de Gordes took root. Each summer, in July and August, the municipality of Gordes offers a program of live outdoor performances that transforms the village into an open-air theater stage. The event is both a cultural service offered to residents and summer visitors, and an invitation to passers-by to look beyond mere tourism and engage with the village's cultural life.
The Château square, with the castle as its natural backdrop, is the heart of the festival: on performance nights, tiered seating or chairs are set up facing an improvised stage, and spectators settle in the gentle Provençal night to watch the shows. Torches and stage lighting bathe the castle stones in a warm, mysterious light that enhances the magic of the place.
Other areas of the village are also used: the medieval alleys, the panoramic terraces, the church parvis. Street arts—jugglers, fire-eaters, acrobats, itinerant musicians—circulate through the village and surprise passers-by at every turn, blurring the lines between stage and daily life.
The strength of the Soirées d'Été de Gordes lies in the diversity of its programming. Theater holds a central place: regional and national companies present classic plays (Molière, Marivaux, Shakespeare) and contemporary works, light comedies for peak season evenings, and more ambitious creations for lovers of live performance. The open-air stage, lit by the stars and spotlights, gives theatrical performances a special atmosphere, balancing intimacy and grandeur.
Music takes all forms: classical or baroque music concerts in the village church, world music evenings on the Château square, jazz or French chanson sessions in courtyards and on terraces. The night concerts are among the festival's most cherished moments, when the day's heat subsides and the silence of the Luberon surrounds the melodies.
Dance is regularly featured in the program: contemporary dance performances, flamenco or world dance shows, which dialogue with the architecture and the landscape. Activities for children—storytelling, puppetry, creative workshops—ensure the event's family-friendly dimension.
An essential aspect of the Soirées d'Été is its nocturnal and luminous dimension. Gordes illuminated at night is one of Provence's most striking sights. The ochre and blonde stone facades take on golden hues under the village's lighting, the alleys carved into the rock become mysterious, and from the panoramic terraces, the lights of the Luberon plain twinkle in the darkness like an inverted sky.
Attending a performance in this nocturnal setting is a double experience: that of the performance itself, and that of the place that magnifies every moment. Actors perform in front of medieval stones, musicians make the night air vibrate, and the audience is as much a spectator of the art as of the village—creating a special connection and a lasting memory.
Les Soirées d'Été de Gordes do more than just attract tourists: they are primarily an event for the local community. Gordes volunteers participate in the organization, local associations run food stalls with products from the Luberon region—Côtes du Luberon wines, tapenade, cheeses, and cured meats—and local artisans exhibit their creations during special market evenings. This community dimension is precious: it anchors the festival in the reality of the village and gives it a human warmth that star performers alone cannot provide.
The 2026 Les Soirées d'Été de Gordes promise a new season of open-air live performances in the Most Beautiful Village in France in the Luberon. Theatre, concerts, dance, and street arts will liven up the evening hours of July and August on the Château square and in the medieval alleys of Gordes.
The Soirées d'Été de Gordes 2026 are preparing a new cultural season to liven up the village throughout July and August. The Renaissance Château square and the spaces of the medieval center of Gordes will once again host a multidisciplinary program combining theater, music, dance, and street arts in an exceptional nocturnal setting.
The 2026 program is built around the idea that the beauty of the place must meet artistic excellence. The invited companies and artists will be chosen for their quality and their ability to engage with the village's architecture and landscape—because performing in Gordes means performing *with* Gordes, making it an equal partner in the show.
The theater evenings will primarily take place on the Château square, facing the illuminated castle. The night concerts—jazz, world music, classical—will resonate from the square and from other village locations. Street artists will roam the alleys throughout the evenings, creating a permanent festive atmosphere in the village.
Special family activities—storytelling, puppetry, children's circus shows—will be scheduled in the early evening to allow the youngest to enjoy the Gordes magic before bedtime. Full program available in June 2026 on the Gordes town hall website.
