The Medieval Festival of Parçay-Meslay: a unique heritage gem
Just 6 kilometers from Tours, the Grange de Meslay is one of the oldest and best-preserved fortified farms in France. Built around 1220 at the request of Hugues des Roches, abbot of Marmoutier, by the architect Étienne de Mortagne, it includes a vast 1,500 m² hall with a remarkable roof structure, a monumental entrance gate, and surrounding fortifications. It is in this exceptional heritage setting that the Medieval Festival of Parçay-Meslay takes place.
Knight duels and historical animations
The Medieval Festival program features knight duels in armor, with demonstrations of sword and lance combat. Throwing animations allow visitors to try their hand at axe and knife throwing in the medieval tradition. The historical exhibition retraces daily life in the Middle Ages with explanatory panels, recreated objects, and period costumes.
Workshops and shows for the whole family
The day is punctuated by medieval puppet shows that delight children, while medieval instrument workshops allow visitors to discover and try out the hurdy-gurdy, psalterion, rebec, and other period instruments. Calligraphy, heraldry, and ancient games workshops complete a program designed for families.
The Grange de Meslay: eight centuries of history
Classified as a Historic Monument, the Grange de Meslay is an exceptional testament to 13th-century monastic architecture. Its oak roof structure, of remarkable span, is considered one of the most beautiful in France. The site is better known for hosting the prestigious Festival de la Grange de Meslay (classical music), founded by pianist Sviatoslav Richter in 1964, but the Medieval Festival offers a unique opportunity to discover this place through the lens of its medieval history.
A friendly event on the outskirts of Tours
The proximity of Tours makes this festival an easily accessible event for a family audience. The friendly atmosphere, the green spaces of the estate, and the beauty of the site make it an ideal outing to discover the medieval heritage of Touraine in an intimate and green setting, far from the hustle and bustle of large events.
