The international meeting for puppet arts in Mirepoix
Founded in 1988, the MIMA — Festival International de la Marionnette is a major event for the puppetry arts in France and across Europe. Every year, for four days in early August, the medieval town of Mirepoix transforms into a vast open-air theatre, welcoming companies from all over the world. With nearly 64 shows and over 60 performances per edition, MIMA stands as the second largest puppet festival in France, second only to the Festival Mondial des Théâtres de Marionnettes in Charleville-Mézières.
The festival is divided into two complementary sections. The IN programme, curated by the Filentrope association, brings together around twenty companies selected for the quality and originality of their work: string puppets, glove puppets, shadow theatre, object theatre, giant animated figures, digital shows, and multidisciplinary performances. The OFF programme, coordinated by the association OFF de MIMA, provides a space for free expression for both emerging and established companies as they take over the streets, squares, and hidden corners of the bastide. Street performances, parades, children's workshops, and professional meetings fill these festive days.
The exceptional backdrop of the bastide of Mirepoix, with its 13th-century covered square, its medieval market hall with monumental timber framing, and its half-timbered houses, offers a unique stage for the art of puppetry. Performances take place in the market hall, under the arcades, in public squares, at the Saint-Maurice Cathedral, in private courtyards, and even in neighbouring villages across the Pays des Pyrénées Cathares, allowing the public to discover the region's remarkable heritage while enjoying high-quality shows.
MIMA is more than just a summer highlight. Throughout the year, the Filentrope association leads outreach programmes, cultural mediation, and creative residencies for schools, social organisations, and local residents. The festival also hosts professional gatherings, training workshops, and conferences, making Mirepoix a true hub for the puppetry arts in the Occitanie region.
The 38th edition of MIMA, International Festival of Contemporary Puppetry, takes place from Thursday, August 6 to Sunday, August 9, 2026, in the medieval city of Mirepoix and the Cathar Pyrenees region (Ariège). On the theme « Our Stories », the festival explores heritage and memory through about forty shows and a rich OFF program.
From August 6 to 9, 2026, MIMA returns to Mirepoix for four days dedicated to contemporary puppetry, object theatre, and animated forms. The 2026 theme, « Our Stories », invites exchange around our heritage: historical facts, family stories, or intimate narratives weave a bridge between past and present.
The second largest French festival dedicated to puppetry, MIMA brings together French and international companies and attracts over 35,000 visitors over the four days.
About forty puppet shows (IN program) and an OFF program gathering more than 25 companies on the Allée des Soupirs (250 m), from August 6 to 9, 2026.
The detailed day-by-day program will be published throughout spring/summer 2026 on the official website mima-marionnette.com.
The festival takes place in the medieval town of Mirepoix (09500), in the heart of the Pays des Pyrénées Cathares in Ariège.
