International festival of sound creation and experimental music
Musique Action is an international festival of sound creation founded in 1984 at the CCAM, Scène nationale de Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy. Every May, the festival offers a bold program mixing contemporary music, electroacoustic music, improvisation, sound performance, and hybrid forms, attracting artists and audiences from around the world. True to its DNA of sonic adventure and total curiosity, Musique Action explores territories where sound, gesture, and image meet, offering rare proposals that renew the listening experience.
Created in 1984 by a collective of local musicians including Jérôme Bourdellon, Daniel Koskowitz, and Antoine Gindt, in partnership with the management of the Centre Culturel André Malraux, Musique Action has established itself over the decades as one of the unmissable events for contemporary musical creation in Europe. The festival is supported by the CCAM / Scène nationale de Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy, a production and dissemination structure dedicated to contemporary aesthetics and practices in music, dance, theater, and visual arts.
The eclecticism of experience, sonic adventure, and total curiosity form the DNA of Musique Action. Each edition offers a program where written contemporary music, electroacoustic music, free improvisation, sound art, noise music, performance, and transdisciplinary forms mixing sound, image, and gesture coexist. The festival hosts both historical figures of sound creation and young emerging artists from around the world, in a spirit of constant discovery and artistic risk-taking.
Throughout its editions, Musique Action has hosted major artists such as eRikm, Ensemble Dedalus, Erwan Keravec, Eliane Radigue, Jérôme Noetinger, Elsa Biston, AUM Grand Ensemble, Guigou Chenevier, Andy Moor, Anthony Laguerre, Hervé Birolini, Barbara Dang, Carol Robinson, Jan Martens, and many others. This diversity of aesthetics illustrates the festival's commitment to presenting a vibrant, borderless panorama of today's sound creation.
While the CCAM remains the beating heart of the festival, Musique Action also spreads to other emblematic venues in the Nancy metropolitan area: the Salle Poirel, the Médiathèque de Vandœuvre, the Manufacture – CDN Nancy Lorraine, and the MJC Lillebonne. This openness to the city allows the festival to reach diverse audiences and create bridges between creative venues and spectators.
Since 1985, a record label has been associated with the festival: the Vand'Œuvre label, whose mission is to preserve the sonic trace of the music produced during the festival. This label now constitutes a unique phonographic collection, a testament to over four decades of experimental musical creation.
With over forty editions to its name, Musique Action has established itself as a laboratory for the experimental, a space where sound creation is constantly evolving. The festival attracts enthusiasts, professionals, and the curious from all over Europe and beyond each year, making Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy a reference hub for new music and sound arts.
The 42nd edition of Musique Action will take place from May 5 to 11, 2026, at the CCAM in Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy and in several partner venues in the Nancy metropolitan area. The festival will continue its exploration of the territories of contemporary sound creation, with an international program mixing written music, improvisation, electroacoustic music, performance, and hybrid forms.
