On Good Friday, April 3, 2026, Bastia perpetuates one of the oldest traditions of Corsican Holy Week: the nocturnal procession through the streets of the Citadel, led by the Confrérie Sainte-Croix (Cunfraterna Santa Croce di Bastia), around the revered Black Christ of Miracles.
On Friday, April 3, 2026, Good Friday, Bastia revives a centuries-old rite of the Settimana Santa. At nightfall, penitents dressed in white albs and hoods, symbols of humility, carry the crucifix through the narrow streets of the Citadel to the sound of sacred polyphonic chants and the antiphon « O Croce, salve Signore ».
The Confrérie Sainte-Croix, attested since the 16th century and attached to the Roman Basilica of Saint John Lateran, is the guardian of this Easter tradition. It watches over the Black Christ of Miracles (Cristu Negru), a crucifix found at sea in 1428 and preserved in the Sainte-Croix oratory, in the heart of the Citadel, revered for centuries for its miraculous nature.
Good Friday evening in Bastia revolves around two processions: one in the Saint-Joseph (San Ghjisè) district with the Archconfraternity, the other starting from Sainte-Marie Cathedral through the Citadel with the Confrérie Sainte-Croix.
Times are indicative, based on the Holy Week 2026 program published by Sainte-Marie Cathedral and the parish of Bastia; to be confirmed with the organizers.
