Italian Cinema in the Spotlight in the Buëch
Created in 2022 by the association Ciné mon mardi, the Viva il Ciné ! festival is an annual event dedicated to Italian cinema that unfolds over four days in the heart of Veynes, a town in the Buëch region of the Hautes-Alpes. Held at the Les Variétés cinema, a 54-seat Art & Essai (Arthouse) venue in the Quai des Arts cultural center, the festival provides an intimate setting for discovering Italian cinema.
A Demanding Thematic Program
Each edition of Viva il Ciné ! revolves around a theme that illuminates a facet of Italian cinema. The 2024 edition was dedicated to "Italian Laughs", while the 2025 edition, the fourth, explored "Italy / Today's Perspectives", highlighting the new generation of Italian filmmakers concerned with the evolution of Italian society, rural life, and the last traces of ancestral cultures. The program includes about ten films, with three sessions dedicated to school audiences.
Award-Winning Films and Discoveries
The program mixes films awarded at international festivals and lesser-known works of contemporary Italian cinema. The 2025 edition notably featured "Vermiglio, the Mountain Bride", "Happy as Lazzaro", and "Martin Eden", offering a rich and varied panorama of current Italian cinema. Screenings from Thursday to Sunday are accompanied by introductions and discussions with the audience to deepen the understanding of the films.
A Local Festival in the Hautes-Alpes
Viva il Ciné ! is part of the cultural life of Veynes and the Buëch, a rural area in the Hautes-Alpes. The festival helps to keep arthouse cinema alive in rural areas and to build bridges between Italian and Alpine culture. Booking is recommended, as the 54-seat venue offers an intimate capacity that encourages discussion and conviviality.
