Saint Rock takes over the château of La Clayette and Digoin serves up its snails: twelve outings for the first weekend of August in Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
The weekend of August 1 and 2 marks a turning point in the season. Several festivals that started in July are playing their final dates, while the August line-up is only just opening. Twelve events cover all eight départements of the region, from the Hautes-Côtes vineyards to the plateaus of the High Jura. Our favourite this week is Cinécyclo, in Lajoux: an open-air cinema whose projector runs on bicycles pedalled by the audience. Rock music in a castle moat, snails by the thousand, a medieval banquet and baroque music round out the picture.
Festival Saint Rock, La Clayette (71): pop rock in a 14th-century moat
On Friday July 31 and Saturday August 1, the grounds of the château de La Clayette turn into an open-air stage. Festival Saint Rock was founded in 2009 by a handful of young locals from the Clayettois area. It now draws more than 5,500 festival-goers to a pop rock line-up mixing established acts with emerging talent. The setting does a lot of the work: a 14th-century fortress ringed by its moat, in the heart of southern Burgundy. Saturday August 1 is the closing night of this edition. A human-scale event, run by volunteers, that has become the rock date of southern Saône-et-Loire.
Les Nuits du 4 Août, La Chailleuse (39): circus, punk and reworked fairground rides
From Friday July 31 to Sunday August 2, the Déflagration association takes over the hamlet of Trépugnat, in Arthenas, part of La Chailleuse. Les Nuits du 4 Août refuse to pick a side: rock, punk, electro, reggae and world music follow one another on stage. Circus acts, street theatre and reworked fairground attractions fill the rest of the site. Three days deep in the Jura, in a rural setting far removed from the big festival fields. The multi-disciplinary formula pulls in a broad crowd. One for people who enjoy being surprised between two concerts.
Musique et Mémoire (70): two final baroque days in the southern Vosges
The Musique et Mémoire festival closes its edition on Sunday August 2, after more than two weeks of concerts. Since 1994, it has brought baroque music into the most striking heritage sites of the southern Vosges: chapels, basilicas, open-air museums. Its base is Faucogney-et-la-Mer, in Haute-Saône, but the concerts move from venue to venue. Internationally known ensembles are invited every summer, which has earned the festival national standing in this repertoire. This weekend brings the season's last dates. For early-music lovers, it is now or next year.
Festiv'Halles, Decize (58): twelve free concerts, from Quebec to Romania
From Friday July 31 to Sunday August 2, the Pointe des Halles in Decize hosts Festiv'Halles, a festival of traditional and world music. Entirely free, it programmes twelve concerts across three days: folk traditions, blues, country, Gypsy music and repertoires from partner regions such as Quebec and Romania. A craft market runs alongside during the day. The event comes back every first weekend of August in this Nièvre town. Free entry and a wide range of styles make it an easy family outing, with no booking and no budget to plan.
Snail Festival, Digoin (71): 1,600 dozen served on the main square
From Saturday August 1 to Monday August 3, Digoin holds the largest Snail Festival in Burgundy. The Place de la République becomes an open-air restaurant where more than 1,600 dozen Burgundy snails are eaten over three days. Dinner dances, fireworks, a farmers' market and a funfair fill out the programme. The festival returns every first weekend of August and keeps the whole town busy. People come to eat and stay for the village-dance atmosphere. The kind of event no national guide lists, yet it fills an entire square for three days.
De Cep en Verre, Nolay (21): eight Hautes-Côtes winemakers and forty craftspeople
On Saturday August 1 and Sunday August 2, the historic centre of Nolay hosts De Cep en Verre, a wine and craft festival. Run since 2004 by the Nolay tourist office and the Syndicat de Défense des Hautes Côtes, it gathers around forty craftspeople and eight winemakers from the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune. Tastings and workshops fill both days, on the Place du Docteur Monge and in the surrounding streets. Nolay sits 18 km from Beaune, away from the busiest tasting routes. The format stays relaxed: you talk to the growers directly, glass in hand.
Montrond Medieval Festival (39): a banquet on a real archaeological dig
On Saturday August 1, the archaeological site of the Tour d'Otton, overlooking the village of Montrond, goes back to the Middle Ages. The La Tour d'Otton association runs this medieval festival with a banquet, historical displays, a local producers' market and themed talks. The venue is the point here. The same association carries out archaeological digs and restoration work on the site all year round. Visitors are not walking through a stage set but across a genuinely medieval site. A day built for families and history buffs alike.
Nuits de Joux (25): open-air theatre inside a Haut-Doubs fortress
The Festival des Nuits de Joux runs at Château de Joux through August 10. Founded in 1974, it turns this medieval fortress into an open-air stage every summer. The castle looks down on the Cluse gorge at La Cluse-et-Mijoux. Classical and contemporary theatre, concerts and shows for young audiences make up the programme. The setting matters as much as the plays: the ramparts serve as natural scenery, with the valley opening up below. It has been the summer theatre date of the Haut-Doubs for more than fifty years.
Musique en Charolais-Brionnais (71): piano moves into Romanesque churches from August 1
The 2026 edition of the Musique en Charolais-Brionnais Festival opens on Saturday August 1 and runs through August 9. Since 2005, this touring festival has brought chamber music and piano into the finest Romanesque churches of southern Burgundy. Around twenty international artists take turns over roughly ten days, moving from one sanctuary to the next. Bois-Sainte-Marie serves as the anchor point, but concerts travel across the area. Pairing classical repertoire with Romanesque architecture gives these evenings a distinctive acoustic. A good excuse to step inside buildings most people only drive past.
Journées Lucien, Entrains-sur-Nohain (58): Frank Margerin and sixties rock'n'roll
On Saturday August 1 and Sunday August 2, Entrains-sur-Nohain celebrates Lucien, the biker character created by cartoonist Frank Margerin. Organised by the Intaranum association, the Journées Lucien feature signings and an exhibition by Frank Margerin, plus rock'n'roll and sixties concerts. This vintage festival comes back every first weekend of August to the small Nièvre town. The mix of comic books, slicked-back quiffs and distorted guitars is rare enough to be worth flagging. Margerin readers find the exact world of his albums, transplanted into a Burgundian village street.
Cinécyclo, Lajoux (39): the film stops when nobody pedals
On Saturday August 1, the Maison du Parc in Lajoux hosts a stop on the Cinécyclo touring open-air cinema. The principle fits in one sentence: screenings are powered by bicycles pedalled by the audience itself. No pedalling, no picture. The tour is part of the Rendez-vous du Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura and travels through the villages for a week in August. Each stop shows short and medium-length films. This is our pick of the weekend: a simple, slightly absurd idea that turns a passive screening into collective effort.
Poét Fest, Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye (89): open-air metal in a former pipe factory
On Saturday August 1 and Sunday August 2, the artists' village of La Poèterie hosts Poét Fest, the metal, hardcore and punk gathering of the Puisaye area of Burgundy. Started in 2016 and run by the TetraPop association, this open-air festival books both national and international bands. The venue alone justifies the trip: a former pipe factory converted into a cultural village, on the route des Janets. The contrast between the quiet Yonne countryside and the volume on stage is the whole point. Aimed at a knowing crowd, but small in scale compared with the big metal circuit.

- In Noyers-sur-Serein (89), the Festival Vallée et Veillée brings four dance-friendly bands — world, afrobeat, electro brass, chanson — to the Place du Marché au Blé on Saturday August 1, free of charge, before 800 to 1,000 people.
- In Saint-Germain-de-Modéon (21), Guitares en Morvan wraps up on Sunday August 2, combining a luthiers' fair with concerts in the village church.
- In Belfort (90), the flea market returns to the Place d'Armes on Sunday August 2, from 7am to 12.30pm, with close to 150 stallholders in the old town.
