The centenary carnival of Guémené-sur-Scorff
The Carnaval Pourleth is a festive tradition in Guémené-sur-Scorff, in the Morbihan region, born in 1925 during a Mi-Carême organized by the inhabitants. Despite some years of interruption and changes of name and date, this popular tradition has continued and now returns every two years. The parade brings together humorous and flowery floats, musical groups, and costumed inhabitants in the streets of this small town of character in Central Brittany. The 2026 edition celebrates the centenary of this unique carnival tradition.
Since 1925, the Carnaval Pourleth has been bringing the streets of Guémené-sur-Scorff, a small town of character nestled in the heart of the Morbihan, to life. Born from a popular initiative during Mi-Carême, this festive tradition has spanned a century of history, adapting to the times while preserving its good-natured and convivial spirit.
The word "Pourleth" evokes the mischievous and mocking spirit that characterizes this Breton carnival. Every two years, the inhabitants of Guémené-sur-Scorff and the surrounding communes mobilize for months to prepare the decorated floats, which are both humorous and flowery. These ephemeral creations, carried by passionate volunteers, compete in ingenuity and humor to comment on local and national news with a quirky perspective.
On carnival day, the procession sets off through the streets of the medieval town. The floats are accompanied by musical groups that liven up the parade throughout the afternoon. The public, often in costume, gathers along the route to admire the creations and participate in the festivities. The atmosphere is one of joy, derision, and sharing, in a spirit true to the Breton carnival tradition.
The 2026 edition is exceptional as it marks the 100th anniversary of Carnaval Pourleth. A century of popular tradition will be celebrated through a special program, with even more spectacular floats and festive entertainment to mark this historic event.
