The Celtic Spring Festival
Beltan (or Beltaine) is one of the four major Celtic festivals marking the cycle of the year. Celebrated at the beginning of May in the Celtic tradition, it heralds the renewal of spring and the return of light. The Festival Beltan, organized by the association Son Ar Leurenn, is part of this tradition by offering three days of festivities dedicated to Breton music and culture.
Three Days of Music and Dance
The Festival Beltan takes place in the towns of Port-Louis, Locmiquélic, and Riantec on the left bank of the Lorient estuary. The program includes:
- Concerts of traditional and contemporary Breton music
- Fest-noz and fest-deiz (Breton dances)
- Musical parades in the streets and on the quays
- Singing walks through local heritage
- Maypole dances, a Celtic spring tradition
Intangible Heritage Celebrated
The festival showcases the rich Breton intangible heritage: singing, dancing, instrumental music, oral traditions, and seasonal rituals. "Beltanitude", a neologism created by the festival, refers to the festive and benevolent spirit that characterizes the event.
Quiches Leurenn and Camaraderie
The festival is also a time for culinary camaraderie with the famous "quiches leurenn", a specialty of the organizing association. Refreshment stands and food stalls accompany each highlight of the festival, creating a warm and shared atmosphere.
Son Ar Leurenn, Engine of Breton Culture
The association Son Ar Leurenn is a major player in Breton cultural life in the Lorient Agglomération area. By organizing the Festival Beltan, it contributes to the transmission and promotion of Breton culture, especially among younger generations. The festival relies on a network of musicians, dancers, and Breton culture enthusiasts.
A Partnership with Three Towns
The Festival Beltan is the result of a partnership between the association Son Ar Leurenn and the towns of Port-Louis, Locmiquélic, and Riantec. This inter-municipal cooperation allows for a varied program and reaches a wide audience across the entire left bank of the Lorient estuary.
