Music, theater, and circus in the heart of the Alpine valleys of Seyne-les-Alpes
The Festival de la Blanche et du Bès, organized by the Association des Jeunes de la Blanche, du Bès Et Tutti Quanti, is a festive and popular event that animated the Seyne-les-Alpes valley for ten editions, from 1998 to 2007. Combining music, theater, circus, entertainment, and conferences, this multidisciplinary festival celebrated artistic diversity in an exceptional mountain setting, at the confluence of the Blanche and Bès torrents. Free and open to all, it offered an eclectic program each year ranging from folk to French song, from brass bands to world percussion, bringing together families and lovers of outdoor culture around the Maison des Jeunes de Seyne-les-Alpes.
The Festival de la Blanche et du Bès was born in 1998 from the initiative of the Association des Jeunes de la Blanche, du Bès Et Tutti Quanti, a collective of young volunteers from the Seyne-les-Alpes valley determined to bring culture to life in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. The festival's name pays homage to the two torrents that cross this narrow valley in Haute-Provence: la Blanche and le Bès, emblematic waterways of the local landscape.
Each year, the festival offered a rich and varied program, combining music, theater, circus, entertainment, and conferences. Music played a central role with a remarkable diversity of styles: folk, French song, world music, brass bands, and percussion. The festival hosted artists from all over France and beyond, offering the valley's public a valuable cultural opening in this rural mountain area.
The festival was held at the Maison des Jeunes de Seyne-les-Alpes, located in the Faubourg district, a stone's throw from the historic village center. This friendly, human-sized venue allowed for a rare proximity between artists and the public. The open-air concerts, street performances, and children's entertainment created a warm and family-friendly atmosphere, characteristic of the festival's spirit.
From 1998 to 2007, the Festival de la Blanche et du Bès had ten editions marked by remarkable volunteer commitment and an ever-renewed program. The tenth and final edition, in September 2007, hosted artists such as Café Bertrand, percussionist Guem, Lhi Jarris, Toma Sidibé, and the brass band Wonderbrass, offering two intense evenings of music and sharing.
Although the festival ceased its activities after its tenth edition, it left a lasting mark on the cultural life of Seyne-les-Alpes and the Blanche valley. It helped unite local youth around an ambitious artistic project and introduce this preserved territory of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence to a wider audience. The spirit of the festival, rooted in the values of conviviality, free access, and sharing, continues to inspire cultural initiatives in the valley.
