Live arts and music on the island of Vassivière
Born in 2008 on the island of Vassivière, the Destination Ailleurs festival is an invitation to artistic travel in the heart of Lake Vassivière, at the crossroads of Haute-Vienne, Creuse, and Corrèze. Throughout the summer, the pedestrian island hosts an eclectic program mixing concerts, street arts, storytelling walks, open-air cinema, theater, contemporary circus, and shows for young audiences. A unique event where nature and creation meet in an exceptional lakeside setting.
Since its creation in 2008, the Destination Ailleurs festival has made Vassivière Island a unique meeting place between live arts and preserved nature. Nestled in the heart of Lake Vassivière, the largest artificial lake in the Limousin region, this multidisciplinary festival transforms the pedestrian island into a vast cultural playground each summer, accessible on foot via the footbridge or by free water taxi from the ports of Auphelle and Broussas.
The festival spans nearly seven weeks, from early July to mid-August, with a thematic program paced by the days of the week. Wednesday afternoons are dedicated to storytelling walks through the island's wooded paths, Thursday evenings to open-air cinema, Fridays to indoor performances with carte blanche for an artist, Saturday evenings to concerts and café-concerts, and Sunday afternoons to outdoor shows for the whole family. This structure allows the public to create their own festival itinerary according to their desires.
Over the years, Destination Ailleurs has hosted renowned artists on the lake's shores: Les Têtes Raides, Les Wampas, Daniel Darc, Chilly Gonzales, Pigalle, Alpha Blondy, Miossec, Sinsemilia, Les Ogres de Barback, Les Tambours du Bronx, HK et les Saltimbanks, and Christine and the Queens in their early days. The deliberately eclectic musical program ranges from French chanson to alternative rock, reggae, folk, and world music, offering a sound palette as diverse as the landscapes of the Millevaches plateau.
Vassivière Island is not an ordinary festival venue. Classified as a Natura 2000 site, it is home to the International Center for Art and Landscape (CIAP), designed by architect Aldo Rossi, which hosts contemporary art exhibitions throughout the year. The Destination Ailleurs festival is part of this dynamic, creating a dialogue between the performances and the natural and architectural heritage of the island: outdoor sculptures, coniferous forests, fine sandy beaches, and lakeside panoramas form an incomparable backdrop for the shows.
True to its spirit of openness, Destination Ailleurs offers most of its shows for free access, with only a few headline concerts being ticketed at a modest price. This pricing policy, combined with the wild beauty of the site and the quality of the programming, makes it a family-friendly and popular event, rooted in the territory of the Millevaches en Limousin Regional Natural Park. Refreshment stands, local food, and picnic areas by the lake complete the experience for a cultural summer in the heart of nature.
The Destination Ailleurs festival returns to Vassivière Island for a new summer season of shows, concerts, and artistic encounters in the heart of Lake Vassivière.
