Storytellers – Storytelling festival in the heart of the Gulf of Morbihan
The Festival du Conte de Baden is a must-attend event for storytelling and oral tradition in Brittany. Founded in 1997, this festival brings together professional and amateur storytellers from all over France and beyond each summer to share stories, legends, and tales in a spirit of conviviality. The festival has two main events: a winter festival in February and a summer festival in July, offering evening storytelling sessions, storytelling walks, shows, and workshops in the bucolic setting of Kergonano in Baden and in the towns of the Gulf of Morbihan.
Since its creation in July 1997, the Festival du Conte de Baden has established itself as one of the major events for storytelling and oral tradition in Brittany. Driven by an association of enthusiasts, this festival celebrates the ancestral art of shared narrative and speech, in a spirit of conviviality and transmission.
The Festival du Conte de Baden features two annual highlights:
In July, the main festival unfolds over a week. The first few days are dedicated to traveling storytelling sessions in the towns of the Gulf of Morbihan (Séné, Auray, Vannes...). Then, from Thursday to Sunday, the entire program is concentrated in the pastoral setting of Kergonano in Baden, where evening sessions, shows, and workshops take place outdoors and under a tent.
In February, a more intimate winter festival offers storytelling sessions and shows in a warm atmosphere, ideal for warming up around stories.
Each edition invites about ten professional storytellers from France and various backgrounds. The festival highlights the diversity of oral traditions: Breton tales, African narratives, oriental legends, everyday stories. Amateur storytellers also have their place thanks to open mic sessions and participatory storytelling evenings.
The Kergonano site, in the countryside of Baden, offers an exceptional natural setting for listening to stories. Under the trees, in the barns, or under the tent, the audience is invited to experience an immersive and intimate experience, far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Conviviality is at the heart of the festival, with moments of sharing around food and drink.
Since its modest beginnings with a thousand attendees, the festival now attracts nearly 4,000 spectators per summer edition. A loyal audience that plans their holidays around the event, demonstrating their attachment to the festival and the art of storytelling.
