A Wine Festival in the Heart of the Cahors Vineyard
Since 1985, the Festival of Independent Winemakers' Wine has brought together wine lovers every summer on the banks of the Lot, in Puy-l'Évêque, one of the most beautiful wine villages in the Lot. Organized by the Federation of Independent Winemakers of the Lot, founded in 1982, this event has become a must-attend summer gathering in the Lot, attracting over 2,000 visitors each year to discover the richness and diversity of the region's wines.
The festival takes place on the esplanade of the village hall in Puy-l'Évêque, an exceptional setting overlooking the Lot valley. The concept is simple and friendly: by purchasing an engraved glass for €4, each visitor can freely taste the wines offered by the thirty or so winemakers present and chat directly with the producers.
An Exceptional Tasting Trail
Each edition offers a tasting trail of over 50 vintages representing the emblematic appellations of the Lot vineyard:
- AOC Cahors: the famous "black wine" made from the Malbec grape, the pride of the terroir
- IGP Côtes du Lot: red, rosé, and white wines with diverse profiles
- IGP Comté Tolosan: fresh and flavorful rosés
- AOC Coteaux du Quercy: robust reds and rosés
The independent winemakers, who cultivate, vinify, and market their own wines, are present to share their passion and offer expert advice on their vintages. It's a unique opportunity to meet those who make the wine, in a warm and authentic atmosphere.
Entertainment, Music, and Gastronomy
Beyond tasting, the Wine Festival offers a festive and family-friendly program throughout the evening:
- Taste and Smell Workshop: a sensory area to learn how to recognize wine aromas
- Wooden Games and activities for all ages
- Live Concert with local bands creating a festive atmosphere
- Pastry Demonstrations of traditional and Quercy specialties
- On-site catering with local Lot products: lamb, duck, artisanal ice cream
- Carriage Rides through the surrounding vineyards
- Raffle with cases of wine to be won throughout the evening
Grape juice is available for non-drinkers and children, making this event a true family celebration accessible to everyone.
Puy-l'Évêque, a Medieval Gem of the Cahors Vineyard
The festival is held in a remarkable setting. Puy-l'Évêque, a medieval town perched above the Lot, is one of the highlights of the Cahors vineyard. Its steep streets, 13th-century keep, and half-timbered houses provide a picturesque backdrop for this wine celebration. The town is at the heart of the AOC Cahors appellation, on a terroir of gravel and clay that gives Malbec its full power and elegance.
The event is organized with the support of the municipality of Puy-l'Évêque and the Tourist Office, and benefits from the participation of local restaurateurs who offer Quercy specialties to accompany the tastings.
