Theater in the city of Brest
The Festival Oups is a theater festival in Brest led by the association Les Contemporains. Born from the desire of Brest actors to volunteer in the life of the city, the absence of professional theater in Brest's social housing neighborhoods, and a will to create social diversity around theater, the festival irrigates the city's venues and neighborhoods every winter. For more than two weeks, it offers a demanding yet accessible program, mixing professional creations, amateur performances, and theater workshops for all ages. Festival Oups uses theater as a vector for social connection and encounters between residents from all neighborhoods.
Festival Oups, subtitled "Theater in the City," is a unique theatrical event in Brest. Led by the association Les Contemporains, it was born from a triple observation: the desire of Brest actors to volunteer in their city's cultural life, the critical lack of professional theater in Brest's social housing areas, and the ambition to foster social diversity through the practice and discovery of theater.
Every year in January-February, Festival Oups takes over Brest's performance venues—from Le Quartz to Le Mac Orlan—as well as community centers, neighborhood houses, and associative spaces in Brest. This presence in working-class neighborhoods is central to the project: the festival reaches out to residents where they live, offering free or low-cost performances in local venues.
The Festival Oups program blends professional creations and amateur performances. Invited companies, both local and national, present contemporary plays, original creations, and diverse theatrical forms: text-based theater, visual theater, performances, readings, improvisations. In parallel, theater workshops led throughout the year by the association culminate in public performances during the festival.
Beyond its artistic program, Festival Oups carries a strong social mission. Theater workshops welcome participants from 6 to 66 years old, amateurs of all levels and social backgrounds. The festival also organizes collective cultural outings, artist meet-and-greets, and convivial moments that encourage interaction among audiences. This participatory dimension makes Festival Oups much more than just a cultural event: it is a community project that uses theater as a tool for empowerment and social cohesion.
Since its creation in 2006, Festival Oups has continuously grown, evolving from a few niche performances to a major event in Brest's theatrical landscape. Each edition brings together thousands of spectators around a demanding yet popular program, confirming that theater has its rightful place in the neighborhoods and that culture is a fundamental right for all.
The 2026 edition of Festival Oups will take place from January 30 to February 15, 2026, in Brest. More than two weeks of popular and demanding theater in the city's venues and neighborhoods.
