Fête de la Musique 2026 in Avignon — Sunday, June 21
On June 21, 2026, Avignon celebrates the Fête de la Musique with over twenty free stages, both inside and outside the city walls. The streets and squares of the City of Popes transform into open-air stages, from the Place du Palais des Papes to the church square in Montfavet, and from Place Saint-Ruf to the Stade Gorlier. Rock, rap, variety, gospel, electro, jazz, chanson, world music, and sacred polyphony: the program, coordinated by the City of Avignon, highlights the region's wealth of local talent.
The historic center in the spotlight
Place des Carmes features a rock and pop lineup with New Born, Capomat, The 3 Gardeners, and BSF; Place des Corps Saints hosts The Annaymones, Velvet Circles, Ykarus, and Nanika. At Square Agricol Perdiguier, the percussion group PercuGaGa opens the evening at 5:00 PM, followed by Mi Va Togo, the "Paillettes d'un soir" show, and the Gospel One Voice Avignon choir. Place Pie welcomes singer Camille Laye followed by the Puzzle orchestra until 1:00 AM, while DJ Albass keeps the dance floor moving at Place de l'Horloge from 7:00 PM to 1:00 AM.
Bars and local businesses are joining the fun: DJ sets at Place Crillon and Le Moutardier, at the Place du Palais des Papes, a Latin American night at Canoa on Rue des Fourbisseurs, general, Latin, and house DJ sets at Le Rouge Gorge, and rock and rap stages on Rue Bonneterie (Pub Z and La Fabrique) and at the Beer Garden on Portail Mathéron.
Roaming brass bands and batucadas
Three groups will roam the center: Mi Va Togo and the batucada Oumpack set off from Square Agricol Perdiguier starting at 7:30 PM, while the batucada Gang'Jolo and its fifty musicians head out from Place Saint-Didier at 8:00 PM. The Avignon brass band La Confédération du Pouêt will liven up Place Saint-Didier from 6:00 PM.
Organ and polyphony in indoor venues
The day begins with sacred music: the association Musique Sacrée et Orgue en Avignon offers a recital at the Collégiale Saint-Didier starting at 3:00 PM (Bach, Liszt, Mendelssohn, Sibelius), followed by the Basilique Métropolitaine Notre-Dame-des-Doms from 5:00 PM (Pasquini, Kuhnau, Martini, Zipoli, Frescobaldi, Pachelbel). In the evening, the Église Saint-Agricol hosts the Ensemble Vocal Olivier Messiaen and Campana. In the garden of the Musée Angladon, the vocal ensemble Rubato et Compagnie offers a musical journey from the Renaissance to the present day at 6:00 PM, echoing the works in the permanent collection.
Beyond the ramparts
In Montfavet, the Comité des Fêtes hosts the church square from 5:00 PM to midnight, featuring the Écho Musical de Montfavet and DJ Sono Bruno. The Stade Gorlier offers an electro DJ set from 6:00 PM to midnight, and Place Saint-Ruf hosts the "Musiques croisées" concert by the group Atmaten at 6:00 PM, blending Mediterranean traditions with jazz.
An entirely free celebration
All concerts and events are free to access, with no tickets or reservations needed. As the stages are spread across a large pedestrian area, it is best to get around on foot or by bike to move from one venue to another. The City will publish traffic conditions for June 21 on avignon.fr.

The Fête de la Musique in Avignon: A Night of Free Music in the City of Popes
Each year on June 21st, the summer solstice, the Fête de la Musique takes over Avignon and transforms the city into a giant open-air stage. Since the establishment of this national event in 1982 by Jack Lang, then Minister of Culture, Avignon has been one of the French cities that best celebrates this great popular music festival.
Hundreds of musicians — amateurs and professionals, established artists and emerging young talents — take over the squares, streets, courtyards, gardens, and monuments of the City of Popes to offer the people of Avignon an exceptionally rich and diverse musical evening. Everything is free. Everything is open to everyone.
An Entire City Transformed into a Stage
The unique aspect of the Fête de la Musique in Avignon lies in the multiplicity of venues occupied by musicians and associations. While the Place de l'Horloge traditionally hosts the main stage with the evening's headliners, music spreads far beyond this central space:
- Place de l'Horloge: The main official stage, featuring artists invited by the City of Avignon and concerts from 6 PM to midnight.
- Ramparts and Esplanades: Open-air stages in the areas around the medieval ramparts.
- Rue de la République and pedestrian streets: Street musicians, jazz ensembles, brass bands, and chamber orchestras.
- Private courtyards and gardens: Numerous associations and individuals open their spaces for intimate concerts.
- Concert halls and music venues: Special programming in the city's partner establishments.
- Working-class neighborhoods: Local stages organized by community centers and local associations.
All Genres, All Audiences
The founding spirit of the Fête de la Musique is musical diversity and universal access. In Avignon, as everywhere in France, this philosophy translates into a deliberately eclectic program that rejects any hierarchy between genres:
- Popular music: Rock, pop, French chanson, reggae, hip hop, electronic.
- Jazz and improvised music: Traditional jazz, contemporary jazz, fusion, free improvisation.
- World music: Flamenco, African, Latin American, Oriental music, etc.
- Classical and contemporary music: String quartets, chamber orchestras, choirs, contemporary music.
- Brass bands and harmonies: Brass bands parade through the streets and liven up the city with their festive energy.
- Traditional Provençal music: Traditional music groups from Provence, accordion, galoubet-tambourin.
The Fête de la Musique is one of the rare events where you can go from a gypsy jazz concert to a classical piano recital, from a beatbox session to a polyphonic choir performance, all while walking through the narrow streets of the old town.
A Memorable Night in a Unique Setting
Avignon offers the Fête de la Musique an exceptional setting. The old town within the ramparts, with its medieval alleys, shaded squares, historic monuments, and unique atmosphere, becomes a dreamlike backdrop for the celebration on the evening of June 21st. The early summer warmth, the starry Provençal nights, the golden light of the solstice: all these elements contribute to creating a festive and memorable atmosphere.
The presence of the Place du Palais and the monumental facade of the Palais des Papes in the background gives the concerts an incomparable scenic dimension. In some years, stages are even set up on the square itself, allowing musicians to perform under the gaze of the papal towers.
An Event Organized with Local Cultural Stakeholders
The Fête de la Musique in Avignon is organized jointly by the City of Avignon, local music associations, music schools (Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional d'Avignon, associative music schools), concert halls and music venues, and numerous cultural associations.
Each year, several hundred artists and musical groups participate, from amateur bands making their public debut to professional artists offering their concerts completely free of charge. This spirit of generosity and sharing is at the heart of the event's identity.
Avignon, City of All Music
The Fête de la Musique is part of Avignon's rich musical history. A city of festivals par excellence — from the Festival d'Avignon to the Chorégies d'Orange, from the Hivernales to the Luminessences — Avignon is a territory of intense musical culture throughout the year. On June 21st, this musical life becomes visible and accessible to all, regardless of social status, generation, or taste.
