Age-old tradition celebrating the Bazas breed since 1283
The Fête des Bœufs Gras de Bazas is one of the oldest popular traditions in Gironde. It originated in 1283, during the reign of Edward I, King of England and Duke of Aquitaine. For over seven centuries, this celebration has honored the Bazas cattle breed, renowned for the exceptional quality of its meat.
The highlight of the festival is the ox parade through the streets of Bazas. Adorned with ribbons and floral crowns, the finest specimens of the Bazas breed are presented by their breeders, accompanied by traditional music. A panel of experts judges the animals in front of the cathedral.
The festival is also an opportunity to taste Bazas beef, a recognized culinary specialty. Meals, producer markets, and gourmet events punctuate the day. The exhibition "From the stable to the table" at the Polyèdre retraces the history of this tradition.
The Fête des Bœufs Gras is a living testament to the rural and gastronomic heritage of the South-Gironde, inscribed in the identity of Bazas and its region.
The Bazas Fat Ox Festival returns in February 2026 to celebrate the age-old tradition of the Bazas breed.
