Fête des Ponts: The Heart and Soul of Limoges
The Fête des Ponts is far more than just a festival; it is the essential gathering for all of Limoges, a moment of communal celebration that has been woven into the city's identity for over a century. Every year, on the second weekend of June, the banks of the Vienne river transform into a massive festival ground where generations come together.
A Century-Old History Born on the Banks of the Vienne
The Fête des Ponts began in 1906, initiated by the "Enfants de la Vienne" nautical society in the working-class district between the Saint-Étienne and Saint-Martial bridges. The local residents, known as "Ponticauds"—laundry workers, fishermen, tannery laborers, and boatmen—organized grand nautical festivals that drew all of Limoges to the riverbanks. This secular, republican celebration grew in popularity until the First World War brought the tradition to a halt. It wasn't until 1986 that the Comité des Fêtes du Pont Saint-Étienne revived this festive spirit, which has continued uninterrupted ever since.
Three Days of Free Festivities
The Fête des Ponts program spans three intense days of entirely free entertainment. On Friday evening, the Trail urbain des Ponticauds kicks things off with a 7 km night run along the Vienne and through the narrow streets of the Ponts district, followed by a DJ set and a traditional public dance. Saturday is the highlight, featuring nautical activities: jousting demonstrations by the Les Joutes de Mèze society, bathtub races, boat parades, rowing lessons with the Club nautique d'aviron de Limoges, flyboard displays, jet-ski taster sessions, and a street fishing competition. Saturday night is the most spectacular moment, featuring the lighting of the traditional Saint-Jean bonfire, a torchlight procession on the river, and fireworks launched over the Saint-Étienne bridge, followed by a grand public dance.
Funfairs, Flea Markets, and Community Spirit
Throughout the weekend, a funfair sets up on the quai Louis-Goujaud, much to the delight of families. Sunday hosts a large flea market on the pétanque courts at the port du Naveix, a 2CV car exhibition, and guided walking tours to discover the heritage of the Ponts district, followed by a convivial meal by the water and an afternoon concert. Food stalls offer local specialties, and various activities punctuate each day: board games and a toy library, gymnastics demonstrations, stilt walkers, brass bands, and face painting for children.
A Festival That Has Crossed the River
The success of the Fête des Ponts is such that the left bank can no longer contain the flow of visitors. For the past four years, organizers have expanded to the right bank and the pétanque grounds of the port du Naveix, where the "Village des Ponticauds" is set up, even closing the quai du Pont-Neuf to traffic. Driven by a hundred passionate volunteers who begin preparations as early as September, the Fête des Ponts embodies the neighborhood spirit and generosity of the Ponticauds.
