Traditional carnival and Crémant festival in Châtillon-sur-Seine
The Tape-Chaudrons is a carnival tradition of the Châtillonnais region dating back to the 5th century, to the time of the Burgundians. Every third Saturday in March, residents parade through the streets of Châtillon-sur-Seine, banging on cauldrons to chase away winter and celebrate the arrival of spring. For about twenty years, the Fête du Crémant has been associated with this event to showcase the winemakers of the Pays Châtillonnais and their know-how with Crémant de Bourgogne.
The tradition of Tape-Chaudrons dates back to the 5th century, to the time of the Burgundians. In the Middle Ages, villagers paraded through the streets of Châtillon-sur-Seine dressed in "dog's sleep"—a long shirt and nightcap—loudly banging on cauldrons. This ritualistic din was meant to chase away winter and welcome spring. Falling into disuse over the centuries, this practice was revived thanks to Germaine Collard, a passionate resident, and then enriched under the municipal mandate of Hubert Brigand with the addition of a float parade accompanied by residents banging on their cauldrons.
For over twenty years, the Fête du Crémant has been associated with the Tape-Chaudrons parade to create a unique event combining popular tradition and wine heritage. The winemakers of the Pays Châtillonnais present their Crémant de Bourgogne vintages, offering tastings and oenological discoveries throughout the day. The Esplanade du Cours l'Abbé and the town center host producer stands, musical entertainment, and festive concerts.
The day's program includes the traditional float parade through the town streets, a barrel stacking competition, open-air concerts, children's entertainment, and the cremation of Monsieur Carnaval at the end of the day. On-site catering allows visitors to discover local specialties accompanied by the precious Crémant. The event attracts several thousand visitors each year to celebrate this living tradition of Burgundy.
The 2026 edition of the Fête du Crémant and Tape-Chaudrons will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, in Châtillon-sur-Seine. The program will include the float parade, Crémant de Bourgogne tastings, concerts, and the cremation of Monsieur Carnaval.
