Medieval archery tradition in Rieux-Volvestre
The Fête du Papogay perpetuates a medieval archery tradition in Rieux-Volvestre dating back to the 14th century. Every spring, archers parade through the streets of this historic town before competing in the Papogay shoot — a wooden bird perched atop a mast — in the green setting of the Parc des Jacobins. Musical entertainment, conviviality, and heritage are all part of this unique popular festival in Haute-Garonne.
The Fête du Papogay is one of the oldest and most picturesque traditions in Rieux-Volvestre, a charming town nestled at the confluence of the Arize and Garonne rivers in Haute-Garonne. The Papogay (or Papeguay) is a wooden bird — often a parrot — placed at the top of a mast, which archers must shoot down with their bows. This tradition dates back to the Middle Ages, when archery guilds trained in this way throughout Europe.
The festival begins with a grand parade through the streets of the medieval town. Archers in costume, accompanied by music groups, walk through the cobbled alleys of Rieux-Volvestre, passing by the Sainte-Marie Cathedral and the half-timbered houses of the historic center. The procession creates a festive and colorful atmosphere that transports spectators to another era.
The highlight of the festival is the Papogay shoot itself, which takes place in the magnificent Parc des Jacobins. Archers take turns trying to shoot down the wooden bird perched at the top of the mast. The one who succeeds is proclaimed "King of the Papogay" for the year. During the shoots, musical entertainment keeps the atmosphere lively, and the public can cheer on the archers in a good-natured spirit.
Established in 1957 to revive this medieval tradition, the Fête du Papogay has become a must-attend event in the cultural life of Rieux-Volvestre. It helps to promote the rich heritage of this former episcopal city and attracts visitors each year eager to discover this ancient custom in an exceptional historical setting.
