The Fêtes de la Madeleine: The Grand Festival of Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre
Each summer, around July 22nd, the day of Saint Mary Magdalene, the village of Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre comes alive to the rhythm of its patronal festival. Nestled at the foot of the Pyrenees, in the Ouzom valley, this historically rich village — founded around a Benedictine abbey in 1022 — celebrates its patron saint during three days of popular festivities organized by the Comité des fêtes de Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre.
Three Days of Festivities for Everyone
The program for the Fêtes de la Madeleine blends tradition and conviviality. The days are marked by pétanque tournaments, children's activities, street performances, and traditional dance demonstrations. Outdoor meals, prepared by the festival committee, bring guests together around local specialties — garbure, duck, spit-roasted pork — in a warm atmosphere.
Each evening, popular dances liven up the village square with orchestras and musical groups. The highlight of the festivities is the traditional fireworks display over the village, offering a pyrotechnic spectacle in the majestic setting of the Pyrenean mountains. Fairground rides complete the festive atmosphere for the delight of families.
An Exceptional Heritage Setting
The festival takes place in a remarkable setting, in the heart of the medieval village of Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre. The former Benedictine abbey, founded in 1022, whose church is a listed historic monument, and the picturesque village alleys offer an authentic backdrop to these festivities. The proximity of the Gave de Pau river and the first foothills of the Pyrenees adds to the charm of this summer event.
