The Feu de la Saint-Jean: a living tradition in the Pyrenees
Every year, on the eve of Saint John's Day, June 23rd, the town of Argelès-Gazost perpetuates one of the oldest Pyrenean traditions: the lighting of the Feu de la Saint-Jean. This summer solstice custom, celebrated for centuries throughout the Pyrenean arc, symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and marks the beginning of summer.
The Fire Ceremony
The evening begins around 10:30 PM on the Place du Foirail, in the town center of Argelès-Gazost. The parish priest performs the blessing of the fire, continuing a ritual that blends Christian tradition with pre-Christian customs related to the solstice. The large bonfire is then lit, casting its flames into the Pyrenean night under the amazed gaze of the assembly.
Around the bonfire, the celebration continues with musical entertainment that gets the crowd dancing and singing. It's a moment of conviviality and sharing, bringing together all generations in a warm and festive atmosphere.
Argelès-Gazost, crossroads of the Pyrenean valleys
Located at an altitude of 462 meters at the confluence of the Gave de Pau and the Gave d'Azun, Argelès-Gazost is the gateway to the Gavarnie Valleys. A renowned spa town since the 19th century, the town offers an exceptional mountain setting for this solstice celebration. The Pyrenean peaks in the background add a grandiose dimension to this evening of fire and light.
