The harvest festival in the Léon region
The Gouel an Eost Festival (Harvest Festival in Breton) is a popular gathering held every August in Plougoulm, in northern Finistère. Created in 1981, it celebrates Breton agricultural traditions and Celtic culture through a parade of 400 participants, old-fashioned threshing, concerts, a fest-noz, and traditional meals. For over forty years, Gouel an Eost has brought together around 5,000 visitors at the Prat Coulm site.
Since 1981, the Gouel an Eost Festival has revived the harvest traditions every summer on the Prat Coulm site in Plougoulm, northern Finistère. In Breton, Gouel an Eost literally means "Harvest Festival" ("eost" referring to both harvest and the month of August), a name that deeply anchors this event in the agricultural and linguistic heritage of Brittany.
Each edition opens with a spectacular parade featuring 400 participants: bagadoù (Celtic music ensembles), cercles celtiques (Celtic dance groups), harvesters in period costumes, old tractors and horses, choirs, and musical groups. In the afternoon, the old-fashioned threshing is the heart of the festival: visitors discover the gestures and know-how of traditional harvests, in a faithful and lively reconstruction of Breton rural life.
Gouel an Eost is also a great celebration of Celtic culture. Concerts, musical entertainment, Breton dances, and fest-noz (all-night traditional Breton parties) punctuate the day and evening. The festival showcases local artisans, farmers, and producers through exhibitions, tastings, and traditional games, creating a space for sharing and transmission between generations.
The traditional meal is a highlight of the festival, bringing visitors together around Breton specialties prepared by volunteers. The friendly and convivial atmosphere of Gouel an Eost makes it an accessible event for everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, in a spirit of authentic popular celebration.
Created in 1981, the festival celebrated its 40th edition in 2022 and continues to attract around 5,000 visitors each year. Driven by the Comité loisirs échanges of Plougoulm and its many volunteers, Gouel an Eost passionately perpetuates the memory of past harvests and affirms the vitality of Breton culture.
The 44th edition of the Gouel an Eost Festival is expected in August 2026 at the Prat Coulm site in Plougoulm, with the traditional program of threshing, parade, and fest-noz.
