Strawberry Festival: Plougastel-Daoulas celebrates its emblematic fruit

Every second Sunday in June, Plougastel-Daoulas vibrates to the rhythm of its famous Strawberry Festival, the most important folk festival in Nord-Finistère. This day of festivities pays homage to the Plougastel strawberry, the emblematic fruit of this commune in Finistère which benefits from an exceptional microclimate thanks to its peninsula bordered by the Brest roadstead and the Élorn river.

A centuries-old tradition

The origins of the festival date back to the early 20th century, with the great parish fairs that already brought the population together around local traditions. After the Second World War, Father Kerhoas and a few enthusiasts revived the festival in 1946 to raise funds and strengthen community ties. In 1980, the association Les Amis de la Fête des Fraises was created to perpetuate and develop the event, which has become a must-see gathering for Breton culture.

Parades, floats, and traditional costumes

The highlight of the day is the grand folk parade in the afternoon, where hundreds of participants dressed in traditional Breton costumes parade through the streets of Plougastel, accompanied by flowery floats and Breton music groups. The bagadoù and Celtic circles compete in elegance and virtuosity, offering a colorful spectacle. The day ends with the traditional Danse des Mille and a festive meal.

Gastronomy and records

The strawberry is obviously at the heart of all attention: sales of strawberry cakes, tastings, stands of local products, and gourmet activities punctuate the day. In 2025, the Strawberry Festival made its mark by breaking the world record for the largest strawberry tart, with an impressive surface area of 49.49 m2, officially homologated. An achievement that illustrates the attachment of the people of Plougastel to their favorite fruit.
