The great festival of Haute-Marne's metallurgical heritage
Wassylor is the metallurgy festival of Wassy, in Haute-Marne, organized every summer since 1985 by the ASPM. The streets of this historic town in the Blaise Valley are transformed into an open-air museum featuring cupola furnace iron casting, traditional blacksmithing demonstrations, exhibitions of old machine tools, and musical entertainment. More than 1,500 visitors rediscover every year a centuries-old know-how born in the 12th century, when the monks of Clairvaux established the first industrial forge in Wassy in 1157.
The metallurgical history of Wassy dates back to 1157, when the Cistercian monks of the Clairvaux Abbey established the first industrial forge in the Blaise Valley. Thanks to the abundance of iron ore, forests for charcoal, and rivers to power the bellows, metallurgy developed considerably, reaching its golden age in the 19th century. The factories of Wassy, Brousseval, and Sommevoire then produced parts for the automotive, chemical, and railway industries, as well as street furniture and art castings renowned throughout Europe.
Created in 1985, the Wassylor festival was born from the desire of the ASPM and local enthusiasts to revive this exceptional industrial heritage. The name "Wassylor" evokes both the town of Wassy and the "gold" of molten iron, a symbol of the region's metallurgical wealth. Each edition offers visitors a complete immersion into the world of foundry and blacksmithing, with artisans and volunteers perpetuating ancestral gestures before a captivated audience.
The highlight of Wassylor is undoubtedly the cupola furnace iron casting, an impressive spectacle where molten metal, heated to over 1400°C, is poured into sand molds prepared by hand. Blacksmiths hammer iron on their anvils, shaping tools, decorative objects, and artistic pieces before the eyes of visitors. Exhibitions of old machine tools, blast furnace models, and art casting collections complete the experience.
Beyond the technical demonstrations, Wassylor offers a festive and warm atmosphere. A market of local producers and artisans allows visitors to discover Haute-Marne's gastronomic specialties, including the famous "croûte au fromage" (cheese toast) and "pâté de Wassy" (Wassy pâté). Musical entertainment, educational workshops for children, and guided tours of the town's metallurgical heritage punctuate the day, making this event an unmissable family gathering of the summer in Haute-Marne.
Wassylor is part of a region rich in remarkable metallurgical sites. A few kilometers away, the Metallurgic Park of Dommartin-le-Franc, managed by the ASPM, features a restored blast furnace dating from 1834 and a museum of metallurgical arts housing over 2,000 objects. The "Route du Fer" (Iron Route) in Haute-Marne connects these various sites, offering a unique discovery trail in France dedicated to the history of iron and steel and art castings.
2026 edition of Wassylor, the metallurgy festival in Wassy. Iron casting, blacksmithing demonstrations, and family entertainment in the heart of the Blaise Valley.
Wassylor returns in August 2026 for a new edition of the metallurgy festival in Wassy. The program will feature the usual highlights: cupola furnace iron casting, traditional blacksmithing demonstrations, exhibitions of machine tools and art castings, a market of local artisans and producers, and educational activities for children.
Wassylor takes place in the town center of Wassy (52130), Haute-Marne, in the Grand Est region. Wassy is located about 30 km south of Saint-Dizier and 60 km north of Chaumont. It can be reached via the D2 from Saint-Dizier or the D60 from Joinville. The nearest SNCF train station is Saint-Dizier (Paris-Est – Saint-Dizier line, about 2h30 from Paris). Free parking is available near the town center and La Forgerie, the iconic performance venue located at 23 place Marie Stuart.
The festival is traditionally held on a Sunday in August, from 10 am to 6 pm. The cupola furnace iron casting takes place in the early afternoon (around 2 pm), marking the highlight of the day. It is advisable to arrive early to enjoy all the entertainment and blacksmithing demonstrations, which begin in the morning.
Admission to Wassylor is free. All demonstrations, entertainment, and exhibitions are free to access. On-site catering (cheese toast, Wassy pâté, grilled meats) is offered at reasonable prices by local associations.
Food stalls offer local specialties throughout the day. A market of local artisans and producers allows visitors to purchase souvenirs and local products from Haute-Marne. Restrooms are available on the event site.
Wear closed-toe, comfortable shoes to walk around the various workshops and demonstrations. The iron casting produces intense heat: maintain a safe distance during demonstrations. The event takes place outdoors; dress appropriately for the weather. Children must be accompanied by an adult near the demonstration areas.
Take advantage of your visit to discover the Protestant temple of Wassy (historic site of the 1562 massacre), La Forgerie (municipal theater), and the Metallurgic Park of Dommartin-le-Franc, 15 km away, open from April to October.
