The Fest-Noz du Golfe: Breton tradition celebrated in Vannes

The Fest-Noz du Golfe perpetuates the tradition of the fest-noz, this popular Breton dance listed as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO since 2012. Organized in Vannes, the capital of the Golfe du Morbihan, this free event invites all audiences to discover or rediscover the richness of traditional Breton dances and music in a friendly and festive atmosphere.

What is a fest-noz?

The fest-noz, literally "night party" in Breton (as opposed to fest-deiz, "day party"), is a public festive gathering where everyone can practice traditional dances from Brittany. Invented in the 1950s to recreate the peasant vigils of yesteryear, the fest-noz has become a major cultural phenomenon, especially since the 2000s. No need to be an expert: beginners are welcome and can learn the steps by joining the circle.

The dances of the fest-noz

The main dances practiced during the Fest-Noz du Golfe are the an dro (circle or chain dance), the gavotte (chain dance alternating partners), the galop nantais (couple dance mixing polka and step-touch), as well as hanter dro, plinn, and dérobées. The musicians (traditional musicians) and Breton music groups accompany the dancers to the sound of bombardes, binious, diatonic accordions, and Celtic harps.

A friendly event open to all

The Fest-Noz du Golfe is above all a moment of sharing and conviviality. Whether you are an experienced dancer or just curious, the warm and inclusive atmosphere invites everyone to participate. The attire is casual (this is not a folkloric show but a lively popular dance) and the most experienced dancers are happy to guide novices in their first steps.

The Golfe du Morbihan, land of fest-noz

The Golfe du Morbihan and the city of Vannes are a region where Breton culture is particularly alive. Throughout the year, many fest-noz and fest-deiz are organized by local cultural associations, Celtic circles, and bagadoù from the Vannes urban area. The Fest-Noz du Golfe is part of this cultural dynamic by offering a large-scale festive event that celebrates the vitality of Breton tradition.
