Grand popular festival with float parade, entertainment and sauerkraut in Geispolsheim
Since 1966, Geispolsheim has celebrated its famous Sauerkraut Festival every last Sunday in August. This major popular festival, organized by the Festi'Geis association, brings together thousands of visitors for a grand themed float parade made by local associations, a flea market, exhibitions in Alsatian farmyards, folk and musical entertainment, and of course, the tasting of the traditional sauerkraut served at Espace Malraux. A festive and gourmet day in the heart of Alsace.
The Fête de la Choucroute de Geispolsheim was born in 1966, driven by the desire of the inhabitants to celebrate this emblematic dish of Alsatian gastronomy. For more than half a century, every last Sunday of August, the village comes alive for a full day of festivities that attract thousands of visitors from the Strasbourg area and beyond. The event is now led by the Festi'Geis association and its volunteers, supported by numerous local associations.
The grand parade is undoubtedly the most anticipated moment of the festival. Each year, a different theme is chosen — such as 'outdoor trades of yesteryear' — and Geispolsheim's associations compete in creativity to build decorated floats illustrating the chosen subject. The parade, which starts at 3 PM through the village streets, is accompanied by music bands, folk groups in traditional Alsatian costumes, and a period-costumed wedding procession, recalling Alsatian wedding traditions of the past.
From the morning, a large flea market takes over the village streets, attracting bargain hunters and strollers. The courtyards of Alsatian farms, with their typical half-timbered architecture, open exceptionally to host art exhibitions, demonstrations of traditional crafts, and presentations of Alsatian rural heritage. This mix of flea market and culture gives the morning a unique atmosphere, between nostalgia and discovery.
The traditional sauerkraut is served at the Espace Malraux, for both lunch and dinner. The meal, accompanied by an aperitif concert from noon, takes place in a festive and friendly atmosphere. Throughout the day, musical and folk entertainment punctuate the festivities: brass bands, traditional dance groups, children's shows, and fairground rides complete the program for an unforgettable Sunday celebration.
Located just 10 km south of Strasbourg, Geispolsheim is a dynamic town that has preserved its village character and Alsatian traditions despite its proximity to the metropolis. The Fête de la Choucroute is an opportunity to discover this living heritage and share a moment of authentic Alsatian conviviality.
