The film festival celebrating island cultures from around the world
The Groix International Film Festival of Islands (FIFIG) is a unique film festival dedicated to island cultures and island life across the globe. Created in 2001 on the island of Groix, off the coast of Lorient, FIFIG offers a program of documentaries, features, and short films dedicated to islands and their inhabitants every August. For five days, Port-Lay and various locations on the island host screenings, concerts, exhibitions, and meetings in a friendly and festive atmosphere. Each edition highlights a guest island or archipelago.
Since 2001, the Groix International Film Festival of Islands (FIFIG) has offered a unique window into island cultures from around the world through cinema. Located on the island of Groix, a 45-minute boat ride from Lorient, the festival benefits from an authentic island setting that echoes its theme.
Each year, FIFIG programs a selection of documentaries, features, and short films that explore the diversity of island worlds: daily life on the islands, maritime traditions, environmental issues, migrations, cultural identities, and the relationship between islanders and the sea. The films come from all continents, offering an exceptionally rich cinematic panorama.
Each edition of FIFIG highlights a guest island or archipelago, with a special program of films, exhibitions, and meetings dedicated to it. In 2025, the islands of Quebec were honored, and the 2026 edition will celebrate imaginary islands for the festival's 25th anniversary.
Beyond screenings, FIFIG offers a full program of cultural events:
The island of Groix, a nature reserve for its unique geology and mineral sand beaches, offers an exceptional setting for the festival. Its wild coastal landscapes, its Port-Tudy harbor, its hiking trails, and its maritime heritage provide an ideal backdrop for a festival dedicated to island cultures.
The 25th edition of FIFIG will be held from August 19 to 23, 2026, on the island of Groix. For this anniversary, the festival will celebrate imaginary islands, offering a special program combining cinema, literature, and artistic creation.
For its 25th anniversary, FIFIG will take place from August 19 to 23, 2026, on the island of Groix. The theme of this anniversary edition will be imaginary islands, a program combining cinema, literature, and artistic creation that explores the dreamlike and mythological representations of islands.
By boat: Compagnie Océane operates the ferry service between Lorient and Groix year-round. The crossing takes 45 minutes. In summer, there are frequent departures (up to 8 round trips per day). It is advisable to book in advance during the festival period.
Note: It is recommended to leave your car in Lorient (parking available near the ferry terminal) and to get around the island on foot, by bicycle, or by bus.
Screenings and activities mainly take place in Port-Lay, a small port on the south of the island, and in various locations in the village of Groix.
Festival passes and single-session tickets are available. Check the official website for detailed prices.
The island of Groix offers hotels, B&Bs, campsites, and seasonal rentals. Very early booking is essential during the festival.
