The great Breton music, song, and storytelling competition in Pontivy
Kan ar Bobl ("song of the people" in Breton) is the largest music, song, and storytelling competition in the Breton and Gallo languages. Organized annually in Pontivy since its creation, its final brings together over 700 musicians, singers, and storytellers from all over Brittany to compete in numerous categories. Over a weekend in April, the Palais des Congrès, the Théâtre des Halles, and the Kénéré Media Library in Pontivy host competitions, concerts, fest-deiz, fest-noz, exhibitions, and introductions to Breton culture.
Kan ar Bobl, whose name means "song of the people" in Breton, is a major cultural event in Brittany. This annual competition celebrates the vitality of music, song, and storytelling in the Breton and Gallo languages, bringing together hundreds of talents from across the historical territory of Brittany.
The Kan ar Bobl final features competitions in numerous categories: singing in Breton and Gallo, duets (biniou-bombarde), Celtic harp, diatonic accordion, storytelling, dance, choral singing, and various instrumental ensembles. Local selections, organized in different Breton regions throughout the winter, qualify the best performers for the grand final in Pontivy.
Beyond the competition, Kan ar Bobl offers a full weekend of festivities: fest-deiz (afternoon Breton dance), fest-noz (evening Breton dance), concerts, exhibitions, film screenings, introductions to Breton and Gallo, Breton wrestling (gouren), and convivial meals. All of this makes Kan ar Bobl a true popular celebration of Breton culture.
Kan ar Bobl plays an essential role in the transmission and promotion of Brittany's intangible cultural heritage. By encouraging the practice of singing, music, and storytelling in regional languages, it actively contributes to the linguistic and cultural vitality of Brittany. The competition is also a fantastic launchpad for young artists who make their debut there in front of a knowledgeable and supportive audience.

By car: Pontivy is accessible via the RN24 from Rennes (1h15) and from Lorient (40 min). Free parking near the Palais des Congrès.
By train: Pontivy station (TER Bretagne). Connections from Vannes and Rennes.
The final takes place in several locations in Pontivy: the Palais des Congrès, the Théâtre des Halles, and the Médiathèque Kénéré.
