Gastronomic festival of the Cul Noir Limousin pig on the Île de Vassivière
L'Île aux Culs Noirs is a gastronomic festival dedicated to the Cul Noir Limousin pig, a heritage breed raised at the crossroads of the three Limousin departments — Corrèze, Haute-Vienne, and Creuse. Organized by the Coopérative du Cul Noir « l'Écusson Noir », this event takes place every summer on the Île de Vassivière, in an exceptional natural setting.
The Cul Noir Limousin is an Iberian pig breed whose quality butchers and chefs compare to the famous Spanish Pata Negra. The star product remains the ham, but the festival allows visitors to discover the full range of charcuterie and cooked dishes: pâtés, rillettes, sausages, grilled meats, and traditional preparations. Producers and breeders are present to share their expertise and the history of this breed saved from extinction.
Beyond tasting, L'Île aux Culs Noirs is a time for meetings between producers, breeders, and the general public. The event is an essential gathering for the entire Cul Noir sector, promoting this breed to a wide audience and raising awareness about the challenges of animal biodiversity and the gastronomic heritage of Limousin.
The 2026 edition of L'Île aux Culs Noirs will be held on July 25th and 26th on the Île de Vassivière. The festival will celebrate the Cul Noir Limousin pig with tastings of hams, charcuterie, and cooked dishes. Producers and breeders from the cooperative will be present to introduce this heritage breed to the general public.
