Pêcheurs du Monde: Cinema in Service of Seafarers
Since 2008, the Pêcheurs du Monde Film Festival has offered a unique window into the world of fishing and maritime communities through cinema. Based in Lorient, France's leading fishing port, the festival benefits from strong territorial roots that nourish its legitimacy and identity.
A Demanding Film Program
Each edition features a selection of documentaries, fiction films, short films, and animated films from all continents. The selected works explore the diversity of fishing practices, the living conditions of fisher-folk, the sustainability issues of fish stocks, maritime traditions, and the transformations of coastal areas.
Decentralized Screenings
The festival is not limited to Lorient: screenings take place in about ten towns in southern Brittany, bringing cinema closer to audiences and coastal territories. Media libraries, cinemas, community halls, and cultural spaces host the sessions, creating a dense and friendly territorial network.
Meetings and Debates
Beyond screenings, the festival organizes meetings with directors, thematic debates, exhibitions, and events that extend the reflection initiated by the films. Fishing professionals, researchers, association activists, and artists come together to discuss contemporary maritime issues.
A Committed Festival
Supported by the Pêcheurs du Monde association and the Pêche et Développement Collective, the festival affirms a strong social and environmental commitment. It gives a voice to artisanal fishermen, highlights the struggles of coastal communities against globalization and overexploitation of resources, and raises public awareness about the challenges of ecological transition at sea.
