The Coupes Auto Légende on the Montlhéry oval

The Coupes Auto Légende line up six race grids, from pre-war cars to youngtimers, and more than 200 drivers. An exhibitors' village is set up, and parades run on the track. On Saturday and Sunday (10/10-11/10), the gates stay open from 8:45 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The circuit dates from 1924. Opened on October 4 of that year, it straddles Linas and Montlhéry. Its speed oval is 2.5 km around, with corners banked at 51°: it is one of the last banked test tracks in Europe.

The ACF Grand Prix was run there from 1925 to 1937.

Dreyfus, Varzi, Nuvolari and Fangio are among the champions this listed historic monument has seen go by.

It sits 30 km south of Paris. Visitor parking is free, and an inside car park takes collector vehicles built before 1995. By public transport, RER B then bus line DN13 serve the site.

Cheese, circus, film and jazz

Brie Happy fills Place Henri IV in Meaux with more than 40 producers and artisans, starred chefs and the national Brie de Meaux competition, on Sunday morning at the town hall. In Meulan-en-Yvelines, the Cheese Festival brings together close to 300 varieties from all over France and about twenty winegrowers. Hours are the same in both towns: Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., free entry.

Under the big top in Les Mureaux, the International Circus Festival has taken over the Parc du Sautour since 2003. Two shows on Saturday, two on Sunday (morning and afternoon). Seats run from 6 euros for a child in the Bronze category to 30 euros for an adult in the boxes.

In Courbevoie, the Atmosphères Festival mixes films, debates with researchers and exhibitions, free of charge, through Sunday the 11th. It draws about 20,000 spectators every October.

For jazz, Automne Jazz en Marne et Gondoire ends on Sunday, in Lagny-sur-Marne and neighbouring towns. Concerts are free with a reservation, up to four seats per person. Villes des Musiques du Monde starts on October 9 and runs to November 7, one venue per evening.

The grape harvest festivals of Montmartre, Gagny and Rueil

From October 7 to 11, the Montmartre Grape Harvest Festival celebrates the Clos Montmartre, one of the last vineyards in Paris, as it has since 1934. The programme: free concerts, a food trail with producers and winegrowers, the grand parade of the brotherhoods. The Montmartre Festivals Committee and the 18th arrondissement town hall run it.

Gagny holds its own over two days, in Parc Courbet. On Saturday afternoon a parade of floats leaves the Stade de l'Est for the park, where the mayor presses the grapes. The Gagny Grape Harvest Festival keeps a wine producers' market going both days and an open-air dance café on Place Foch on Saturday evening. Free entry.

Rueil-Malmaison has Sunday only. The Rueil-Malmaison festival takes over the Buzenval district around Place Henri Regnault: more than 200 exhibitors and a large flea market from 9 a.m., the harvest mass in the morning, music from 2 p.m. and a tasting of wine from the municipal vines.

For Gagny, the RER E stops about 780 m from Parc Courbet.
