Gourmet celebration of the famous Lorraine cake in the setting of the Château Stanislas
The Fête de la Madeleine de Commercy annually celebrates the town's iconic cake, whose origins date back to 1755 when Madeleine Paulmier improvised a dessert for Duke Stanislas at his castle. Labeled one of the Most Beautiful Festivals in France, this day takes over the courtyard of the Château Stanislas with a gourmet market, making workshops, street performances, concerts, and a grand magical parade. Nearly 6,000 visitors share this Lorraine culinary heritage in a friendly atmosphere.
The Madeleine de Commercy is more than just a pastry: it is an identity symbol rooted in the history of Lorraine since the 18th century. According to legend, it was in 1755 that Madeleine Paulmier, a young servant of the Marquise Perrotin de Barmont, saved a dinner given by Duke Stanislas Leszczyński at his castle in Commercy. Lacking molds, she used scallop shells to bake her preparation, giving the cake its characteristic shell shape. Conquered, Stanislas named the cake after its creator. The Fête de la Madeleine perpetuates this tradition by celebrating this unique culinary heritage every year, recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Festivals in France.
In the heart of the courtyard of the Château Stanislas, a vast gourmet and artisanal market brings together dozens of local producers and artisans. Visitors can discover madeleines in all their forms—plain, chocolate, mirabelle plum, bergamot—as well as other Lorraine specialties: mirabelle plum jams, Meuse honey, cheeses, cured meats, and dragées. Madeleine making workshops allow both young and old to get their hands dirty and leave with their own creation, guided by passionate pastry chefs.
The Fête de la Madeleine transforms Commercy into a true open-air theater. More than 50 artists take over the castle courtyard and Avenue Stanislas to offer breathtaking street performances. The highlight of the day is the grand magical parade that winds through the town center, featuring acrobats, fantastic creatures, and brass bands in an enchanted procession. Live performance companies, such as the company Remue Ménage, create tailor-made processions blending poetry, humor, and wonder.
Concerts and musical entertainment punctuate the day, accompanying visitors' strolls between the market stalls and the various entertainment areas. Original culinary shows present the madeleine in a fun and interactive way, offering a quirky perspective on this gastronomic heritage.
Guardian of Commercy's gourmet spirit, the Confrérie de la Madeleine and its 40 companions ensure the transmission of this ancestral know-how. Present at the festival, the brotherhood participates in the entertainment and helps promote the Commercy madeleine far beyond the borders of the Meuse.
The Château Stanislas, residence of the Duke of Lorraine in the 18th century, provides a majestic setting for this celebration. Classified as a historical monument, it was restored after the 1944 fire and today houses the town hall. Its main courtyard and gardens offer an exceptional backdrop for this festival that combines culinary and architectural heritage. An open-air exhibition dedicated to famous Madeleines in history completes the cultural discovery, available throughout the summer behind the castle.
