About Fête de la Mer
Fête de la Mer — edition 2026
The Molène Sea Festival returns on Saturday, August 15, 2026 to the island's port. Organized by the SNSM station of Île-Molène, it is first and foremost a maritime celebration and a tribute to those lost at sea, followed by a great day of friendly activities in the heart of the island village.
Molène Sea Festival 2026
On Saturday, August 15, 2026, the island of Molène celebrates its traditional Sea Festival, organized by the SNSM station of Île-Molène. An unmissable August 15th event in the archipelago, this festival combines a religious dimension, a tribute to lost sailors, and popular festivities on the port.
The day opens with mass and then the blessing of the sea on the quay. The rescue boats from neighboring stations (Le Conquet, Ouessant) then set sail to lay a wreath in memory of those lost at sea. The rest of the day is punctuated by numerous activities: on-site catering, sale of SNSM clothing and items, raffle, an afternoon concert followed by an evening concert from 9 PM, fireworks at dusk, and music until 2 AM.
For this edition, helicopter baptisms are also offered, with tickets on sale on the island (Proxi grocery store and Au Vent des Îles restaurant).

Molène: An Island of Rescuers in the Iroise Sea
The island of Molène, a tiny jewel in the Molène archipelago in the Iroise Sea, is home to just 140 permanent residents. Yet, this island community maintains a visceral connection to the sea and its dangers. The Molène SNSM station, composed of volunteer rescuers, watches day and night over one of the Atlantic's most feared maritime passages, between the mainland and the island of Ouessant. It is in this context that the Fête de la Mer takes on its full meaning: a moment of remembrance, gratitude, and celebration for those who risk their lives to save others.
The August 15th Ceremony: Between Faith and Memory
Every August 15th, the Assumption Day, the island of Molène experiences a moment of intense emotion. The day begins with a solemn mass in honor of Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Retour, patron saint of sailors. At noon, the community gathers on the port dike for the blessing of the sea, a solemn ritual. The rescue boats from Molène, Ouessant, and Le Conquet then set sail to lay a wreath of flowers offshore, in memory of lost sailors and rescuers. This moment of collective remembrance unites islanders and visitors in shared emotion.
Island Festivities and Camaraderie
After the ceremony, it's time for celebration! a musical aperitif on the port kicks off the festivities. Visitors can discover island specialties: the famous Molène sausages, mussels and fries, and sandwiches prepared by volunteers. Games for children and adults, a raffle, and the sale of SNSM merchandise (clothing, accessories) liven up the afternoon. In the evening, concerts take over, followed by fireworks at dusk that illuminate the Iroise Sea. The celebration continues until 2 a.m. with music and dancing.
Getting to Molène for the Festival
To reach Molène on August 15th, the maritime company Penn Ar Bed offers crossings from Le Conquet and Brest. Special fares are available for the occasion: 2 euros for islanders and subscribers, 10 euros for other passengers. The crossing takes about 30 minutes from Le Conquet. It is advisable to book in advance as places are limited and the crowd is significant for this festive day.
A Solidarity Commitment to Sea Rescue
All profits from the Fête de la Mer are donated to the SNSM to fund sea rescue and assistance missions. Every purchase, every raffle ticket, every item bought directly contributes to the funding of equipment and the training of volunteer rescuers. Participating in the Fête de la Mer is therefore also a gesture of solidarity towards those who, for generations, have ensured the safety of navigators in the Iroise Sea.
