Celebration of Alsace's iconic pastry at the Château du Haut-Barr
Organized every year in August by the Confrérie du Haut-Barr, the Fête du Kougelhopf de Saverne celebrates Alsace's most iconic pastry in the spectacular setting of the Château du Haut-Barr, nicknamed "the eye of Alsace". Since 1994, this gourmet festival has brought together around 2,000 visitors for tastings of artisanal kougelhopf, baking demonstrations, folk entertainment, and exploration of this medieval castle perched at 458 meters above sea level, overlooking the Alsatian plain.
The kougelhopf (also spelled kouglof, kougelhoff, or kugelhopf) is more than just a pastry in Alsace: it is an identity symbol, present on all festive tables, from Sunday breakfasts to major family celebrations. And it is at the Château du Haut-Barr, a medieval fortress perched at 458 meters above Saverne, that this golden brioche with raisins and almonds is honored each summer during its own festival.
Founded on October 21, 1994 and chaired by Rodolphe Oberling, the Confrérie du Haut-Barr aims to animate the castle site and promote the gastronomic traditions of Saverne. The Fête du Kougelhopf is its flagship event, an attraction that has become widely recognized beyond Alsace, attracting visitors from all over the Grand Est region and beyond each year.
The history of kougelhopf is lost in the mists of time. Terracotta molds found in archaeological excavations attest to the existence of these cakes as early as the 18th century. Its name could derive from the Gugelhut, the headdress of Strasbourg parliamentarians, or from Kugel (ball in German). According to legend, it was Marie-Antoinette, an Austrian princess who became Queen of France, who popularized this pastry at the court of Versailles.
The Fête du Kougelhopf takes place on a Sunday in August, usually from 10 am to 6 pm. Visitors can discover the different varieties of kougelhopf, from the classic raisin version to savory versions with bacon and nuts, as well as original creations by local bakers and pastry chefs. Making demonstrations, folk entertainment with groups in traditional Alsatian costumes, and guided tastings punctuate the day.
The Château du Haut-Barr, nicknamed the eye of Alsace for its exceptional panorama over the plain, the Vosges mountains, and the Black Forest, offers a unique setting for this gourmet festival. The medieval ruins, the Devil's Bridge connecting two rocks, and the Romanesque chapel create a singular atmosphere, blending historical heritage and Alsatian lifestyle.
