Practical tips
As the Oyster Festival takes place by the sea, bring sun protection and a hat in summer, or warm, windproof clothing in spring. Oyster tastings are done standing or sitting on the port quays: bring a blanket or a folding chair for more comfort. Oysters are opened on-site by the oyster farmers.
Accessibility
The port of Locmariaquer is generally accessible to people with reduced mobility. The quay is flat and paved. Public restrooms are available near the port.
Safety and regulations
Glass bottles are discouraged on the festival site. A first-aid station is set up nearby. Dogs on a leash are accepted. Children must remain under adult supervision, especially near the quays.
Also to see
Take advantage of your visit to Locmariaquer to discover the remarkable Grand Menhir Brisé d’Er Grah (the largest known menhir, now in four pieces), the Table des Marchands (a remarkably preserved dolmen), and the tumulus d’Er Grah. These megalithic sites, managed by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, are located a few minutes from the port.
Locmariaquer, oyster capital
Locmariaquer, a commune in the Golfe du Morbihan, is one of the great capitals of Breton oyster farming. Its oyster beds, nourished by the rich waters of the gulf, produce flat and hollow oysters renowned for their delicacy and iodized taste. It is this age-old tradition that the Oyster Festival honors each year, attracting thousands of seafood lovers to this village with its rich megalithic heritage.
The oyster opening competition
A highlight of the festival, the oyster opening competition pits amateurs and professionals against each other in a friendly but serious contest. Participants compete to open a dozen oysters as quickly and cleanly as possible, cheered on by the public. This competition, which has existed for over 25 years, perpetuates the tradition of local oyster farmers and highlights a technical skill that is an art in itself.
Tastings and meal platters
The festival offers visitors the opportunity to taste freshly opened oysters, accompanied by white wine, as well as meal platters including oysters, seafood, far breton, and other local specialties. The catering stands, run by the Festival Committee and the Oyster Farmers' Syndicate, offer fresh, quality products at affordable prices.
Entertainment and festivities
Beyond gastronomy, the Oyster Festival offers musical entertainment, shows for the whole family, boat trips in the gulf, and visits to the oyster beds. The atmosphere is that of a large popular and maritime festival, where visitors enjoy the exceptional setting of Locmariaquer and the view of the Golfe du Morbihan.
Exceptional megalithic heritage
A visit to Locmariaquer for the Oyster Festival also allows you to discover the commune's remarkable megalithic heritage: the Grand Menhir brisé d'Er Grah, the largest known menhir in the world, the Table des Marchands, and the tumulus d'Er Grah, witnesses to a fascinating prehistoric civilization.
