The Maritime Festival of Port-Louis: the sea celebrated in the fortified town

The Maritime Festival of Port-Louis celebrates every summer the maritime heritage of this fortified town located at the entrance of the Lorient estuary. A town of character turned towards the sea for centuries, Port-Louis possesses a rich maritime heritage that this festival highlights through varied and festive activities, to the great pleasure of residents and visitors.

Activities centered around the sea and boats

The Maritime Festival offers a dense program of maritime activities: visits of traditional boats docked at the port, sailing and navigation demonstrations, sailor's knot workshops, introduction to sea rescue with SNSM volunteers, and exhibitions on the maritime history of Port-Louis and the Lorient estuary. Children can participate in fun workshops for building small boats and discovering marine fauna.

Sea shanties and shows

The festival is punctuated by sea shanty concerts, a living tradition of Breton maritime heritage. Street shows, Breton dances, and musical entertainment liven up the days and evenings, creating a festive and warm atmosphere in the town's streets. A seafood market and tasting stalls for oysters and seafood complete the experience.

The citadel of Port-Louis: exceptional heritage

The citadel of Port-Louis, built in the 16th century by the Spanish and then fortified by Vauban, overlooks the Lorient estuary. It houses the National Navy Museum and the French East India Company Museum, witnesses to French maritime history. The Maritime Festival is part of the continuity of the "Citadelle en Fête" event organized by the National Navy Museum, which offers historical reenactments and activities within the citadel walls.

Port-Louis and the Lorient Océans festival

The Maritime Festival of Port-Louis is closely linked to the maritime ecosystem of the Lorient estuary. The town actively participates in the Lorient Océans festival, a major maritime celebration that extends across the entire estuary (Lorient, Lanester, Locmiquélic, Gâvres, Guidel, and Port-Louis), with boat parades, concerts, and nautical activities. Port-Louis makes its unique contribution to this grand maritime event thanks to its historical heritage and its strategic position at the entrance of the estuary.

Maritime Festival — edition 2026
